Black Sludge in AST

What up guys? I opened my AST today and noticed some black sludge near the cap. There's also some on the coolant dipstick. It just sticks there. It doesn't smell like oil. I checked and someone said that it might be the coating from rubber hoses or just dirt. There's no problem with cooling and high temps in my car either. Though my car idles around 1200 and I need to tune it soon. Any guesses about the sludge?

I have the same problem. I talked to a couple of people and they said that it is most likely the coolant seal ready to go out. A couple of people also said that it might be the hoses. So I changed those out. That wasn't the problem. I'm getting ready to get my engine rebuilt and get a street port while its out. Well I hope that this helps a little. Do a search and you'll find that a coulpe of other guys had the same problem.

The black sludge is from the hoses and is actually the worst right when you replace them with new ones. It is basically rubber from the hoses. If you buy some new hose you will notice a thin layer of rubber dust on the inside of the hoses. This is what the deposits are made out of. Keep cleaning the stuff out and over time the problem will go away unless your hoses are starting to break down from age. If so replace them and... the problem will get worse But then it will go away after you get it all out. It has nothing to do with engine seals.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I'll still do a flush though since I just got this car.
