BIG pool of coolant. Poor baby...

Howdy all,

Ive got a 2000 FD with about 16,000 ks on it, and this evening as I drove up my drive way I heard a pretty ordinary sound. Gushing water.

Within about 5 minutes of pulling up there was a BIG pool of water under my car. Looking at the front, there was even a bit of steam around my headlights. Looking along the driveway I can see where the water trail first started, and luckily its only about 5 metres before I pulled up.

Ive only had the car for 5 months and less than 2 thousand ks, so its a bit of a bugger, but i think its probably just the AST (which I was planning on replacing with an alloy number next service).

Needless to say tomorrow morning its going to be towed to maztech. It might serve as a nice time to get rid of the pre-cat, so i guess its not all bad!

So aside from it being the AST cracking, what else is it likely to be?

Ahh the joys of rx7 ownership! If it was any other car I'd be shattered that something like this had happened so early on - but she give me so much pleasure I just cant stay angry at her :-)

Cheers

Could just simply be a coolant hose, either split or come off. Another possibility is if it has a stock radiator, the plastic end tanks sometimes will let go catastrophically....

Good luck!

if you popped open the hood, you should be able to see if the AST is cracked, or even trace some visible coolant delivery hoses to see if there's a split or if it just came undone.

Turns out it was just a "water bottle" or something that had split and they should have it all fixed tomorrow!

Very happy :-)

And thanks vrmmmpshhh, there is no pre-cat on my model. Which raises the question, is getting a dump pipe still going to be a good upgrade performance & reliability wise? Might it be better to go for a high-flow cat instead?

If you don't have a precat and are looking towards reliability, leave the exhaust as-is, with the exception of a nice catback exhaust. ie, leave the stock main cat in place. better boost control and stability.

Also, sounds like your AST broke, pretty common occurence.
