The RE-A shifter is basically the stock shifter with a little taken off the top. There's not much of a reduction with it. It really depends on the amount of shifting reduction you are looking for.. IMO, Mazdaspeed (and the replicas) has the best short shifter for the FD.

GoRacer 07-13-07 10:53 PM

That's apples and oranges. You can compare the RE-A with the Mazdaspeed but the B&M is completely different. It uses it's own housing, has springs and does not feel like stock (clicks in to gear).

There is more to making a short shifter then cutting the top. You have to rebalance it. There's pictures from other posts that show the difference.

Yes, the RE-A is shorter (about an inch) and is extremely smooth. I like the position alot better then stock. The only drawback is since it's so beefy I can only get one rubber boot to stay on. The second one allways pops off. But it's still enough to keep the heat out. I'm not sure if the Mazdaspeed stalk is just as beefy or if it's taller.

I have the B&M and it's really annoying with the "click" in each gear shift. I will look into the Mazdaspeed replica eventually.

Yup, I have the RE and I love it. The throw and length and a little shorter than stock, but the feel is much better. My car had a ebay B&M style in it, and it was super stiff and notchy.

Sent you a PM. I have both RE and MS. Using the MS. If you search you will find that most people like the two That I have. You just need to see what you are after. What I have read is that the B&M is not that great of a feel.

JayShadow 07-14-07 12:48 AM

I went with RE and havent looked back.

GoRacer 07-14-07 01:01 AM

Does anyone have a pic of the RE-A and MS side by side? Has anybody used both?

Was lookin at the RE shifter.Sounds like most of you guys are happy with it!!The RE shifter is on ebay for sale for a good price, thats how I saw it.

GoRacer 07-14-07 01:45 PM

yeah yeah but I wanted to see a pic of the RE-A and MS next to each other. There was a thread with the RE-A and stock. I think the MS is less think and taller then the RE-A but wanted to see them in a pic side by side.

swif 07-14-07 02:17 PM

The thread that shows the re with stock will also show a MS. You will see that the MS is the same size as stock. The folcrum is much higher on the MS. This is what gives such a short throw to the MS combined with rasing the base on the stock shifter.

The Re is shorter then stock and I think the bent in the shifter is more then stock.

Maybe the guy up there can take out his and show us the two side by side.

This thread has some pictures:

I have a B&M knock off which I modified with a stock lever for the upper part. I agree that the B&M style is notchier and that the stock type shifters are smoother; however, if you like to bang off 3rd gear under power as I do, the B&M type gate has proven to be much more accurate for me.

Here you can see the longer pendulum and a different shape or angle from the fat stalk to the threaded stem. I don't know if there are any clearance issues but on my CRX the Neuspeed short shifter has a cut stem and they compensate by elongating the pendulum like the MS above and it hit the exhaust. I had to gring it down and now it only hits in reverse.

In this pic they give the allusion they are the same except for a cut stalk. I don't think it was made without rebalancing. I would inagine the center beefy part is heavier then the stock one. I could tell you adding the weighted RX-8 shifter did make alot of difference to counter the shorter stem.

B&M is the only way to fly............

Yes, but using the 2 pictures you can draw a direct comparison between the two. The RE-A is basically the stock shifter with a little off the top. You can see that it's probably the same or similar length as the Mazdaspeed 'overall'. However, the MS one has the folcrum much higher which probably cause the upper/installed height to be a little lower.

Quickfini 07-14-07 08:07 PM

I've tried all 3 shortshifters mentioned above, and am currently using a Mazdaspeed. The Mazdaspeed and B&M have the same throw length. However, the Mazdaspeed is as smooth as stock, while the B&M is quite notchy. The RE doesn't seem to reduce as much as the other 2. It basically feels like a stock shifter, but physically shorter.

I would rate the Mazdaspeed and B&M above the RE, since that's what a shortshifters for.. shorter throws. Out of the Mazdaspeed and B&M, it depends on what you like. If you want smooth as stock, go for Mazdaspeed. If you like the sporty notchiness, then get the B&M. The B&M is much cheaper than the Mazdaspeed as well.

DGblk93 07-15-07 08:55 AM

I like my B&M shifter. The throw is definetly shorter and I personally like that notchy feeling. The shifter really clicks into gear with just a little bit of effort. It's hard to explain - but to me it feels like you are a little more connected to the car. Feels like you are really driving a sports car - not a video game.

11000R.P.M 07-15-07 09:53 AM

mazdaspeed here!! old setup was b&m shift is much smoother and 3rd gear is perfect!!!

KaiFD3S 07-15-07 11:21 AM

Basically I see it this way

If you want just smoother shifting without reducing throw that much go with the RE

If you want to reduce the throw but like the smoother shifting go with the Mazdaspeed

If you want to reduce throw but like the notchy feeling like me since it gives you a more feel that you are in gear then go with the B&M.

You decide, I had all 3 but I liked the B&M better since you can feel it go in gear better, when I had the Mazdaspeed it kinda felt like it did not go in gear as good since it was smoother but it did.

aaron1017 07-15-07 12:11 PM

I like my B&M as well. It feels REALLY solid, and I like that.

futureshock 07-16-07 08:38 AM

I have the RE now and can't complain
