Benefits of 94-95 over 93?

I'm a FC owner since 1986...I want to upgrade to the FD. Question I have is are 93s alright or were there major improvements to 94-95 models?

while shopping for an FD I am looking at some things: rebuilt motor w/ reliability mods, minor performance mods and of course overall condition...

94 and 95 are rarer, ~4000 imported versus ~9000. i think the interiors are nicer (guages, black not tan). some of the recalls were already done on the 94,95. think i remember reading about the peeling interior being upgraded, the wheels being stronger, minor changes here and there. given the same condition 93, 94/95 i'd obviously get the 94/95 and pay a little premium, but a nice 93 is better than a crappy 94/95, since in the end they're all the same in terms of power,handling.

main differences were slight packaging changes...

R1 became R2 with a slightly softer suspension

Touring became PEP/PEG .. some have Bose, some do not?

94-95 had a passenger airbag, for some people this matters, others it doest.

CYM was no longer available past 93. Chaste white was available. You could get silver on the R2.

The dash material was improved.

Theres no big differences, but I would still rather pay a slight premium over for the 94-95. Minor improvements but still nice to have

in 94 they had the PEP in addition to the touring.
no bose for the PEP, but still in the touring

95’s also have the newer r134a Freon. However, Mazda made no increase in the A/C unit sizing so the cars lost a noticeable 8-10% in maximum cooling capacity; no big deal except on really hot days and/or stuck in traffic.

Radiator cooling fans already updated.

Less Trouble with 3K hesitation, but don't know why. Visably more/better engine grounds and maybe ECU changes. Power seems to come on smoother with less noticable turbo switchover. Some of this might just vary with vehicle, too.

Minor changes to instrument cluster; tach no longer has all the small markings.

Overall better exterior paint and as already noted Mazda fixed interior peeling problems.

the 93' interior panels look WAY better than the 94+

93's have a nice smooth flat texture to them (given they if its in mint condition).. the 94+ interior looks cheap it has a rough glossy cheap looking plastic look to them.

'93s have "premium paint" that is known to fade fast...especially on the nose, after '93 Mazda switched to a more conventional painting method. I think '93 was the only year for the metal sun roof..after that they switched to glass. (may have switched after 94) Basically...my advice would be to look for the best FD you can find that will fit your needs..as said before a nice 93 is better than a crapped 94...take what you can get as the differences are minor. I've also noticed many 93s being repainted if they weren't garaged...I'd stay away from those. Mine is a 93 VR touring and the paint is original and perfect, don't let someone tell you all 93s needed repaint (as some people tried to tell me when I was shopping)

One other difference i've heard about is boost. From what I know, '93's boost a bit more. Not sure exact specs, i'm positive there's a thread on this. Supposedly, Mazda lowered the boost levels on '94+.

how important is it for the FD to have a rebuilt motor when looking?

I have a ported motor in my FC now and love it (normally aspirated)

'94s do have metal sunroofs. they alo had glass moonroofs available.

definately find one in good condition, and make sure they idle smoothly, trannys shift good no grinding, etc.

If you can find a 93' in good condition, go for it. Most likely, the differences won't be too great, unless your picky. It's more about the performance anyway, in which all FD's are created equal. lol I love my 93' too.

totally false. boost was the same in all 3 years the car was in production given that the car is in good running condition.

this is from a previous post I made, rather than linking it, here's the post:
actually, there were a few changes in the engine bay between '93 and '94 - different EGR, different ECU, something to do with the cooling system (the '93 recall should have fixed that, though)... couple other things (I used to know them all when I gave two craps about it).

as far as performance and reliability, there's zero performance change by year, and only slight difference in reliability - so little that age will play a bigger factor in reliability that the changes (assuming all the recals have been taken care of).

however, there was a decent amount of interior work done on the '94 '95 - less rattles, less squeaks, the dash doesn't peel, less busy gauges, etc.

edit: I just came across this - figured it would be a good time to post it:
1. 94-95 Instrument cluster is different due to the fact of having no small indication lines between numbers
2. 94-95 Have smaller rear swaybars.
3. 94-95 Have different dash panels in the way that they're not painted and won't peel like the 93's
4. 94-95 Have 2 additional braces under the rear subframe to minimize the rear subframe from flexing under load(Mostly to try and prevent axle hop)
5. 94-95 Have dual airbags.
6. The EGR system on the 94-95 is different.
7. The 93's were the only ones that came with chrome colored intake manifold nuts.
8. The 93's intake elbow on the throttle body was grey colored, not black like the 94-95.
9. Touring didn't exist in 95 it was replaced by the PEP package, even though the PEP package was introduced earlier in 94.
10. Only Tourings came with glass sunroofs.
11. Only 93 offered a CYM(Competition Yellow Mica) on R1 models
12. There was no white RX7 in 93, only 94-95.
13. R1 and R2's only came in Yellow, Red, Black, and Silver.
14. 95 RX7's used R134 A/C refrigerant, not R12 like the 93-94.
15. 95 RX7's also used a lighter ABS system than the 93-94.
That's all I can think of right now that some people don't know about if I think of anything else I'll let you guys know.

R1=93
R2=94-95
R1 front strut bar is adjustable, not in R2 for some reason.

Some older '93s have a security system issue where it won't engage if the passenger door is opened before the engine is turned off...

I sound like a nut telling my girlfriend not to get out while I let the engine idle after we park.

94-95 differneces

Four other mechanical differences/improvements that I understand were made from the '93 that I don't see on the lists above.

Metal LIM to engine gasket rather than paper.

Revised (firmer) shift select spring on trans to help prevent dreaded 5th syncro demise.

Improved (stronger) clutch in late '94

Revised thermostat housing in '95 that does not allow the AST elimination mod to be done. (filler neck is part of the housing)

Trivia perhaps but differences none the less.

A couple other minor differences between 94-95's and the 93's that are usefule in confirming the age of the car...

1994 got:

'One touch' driver side window
Map pockets on the back of the seats
Slightly revised dash

1995's

Red leather was dropped (actually dropped half way through the 1994 model year).
Touring model was dropped.
