Bearings and stuff!

Hello all, I have a 92 fd touring. And I happy to say she’s a great car and I love it. However I’ve been opening her up here and there and the gearbox now sounds awful! I need to rebuild the box something I would enjoy doing.
so my first question is has anyone done a rebuild and was it hard or easy? Any tips to avoid ect please

second question is where the hell do I find a rebuild kit, I am from the UK and have only seen a possible kit on USA amazon site. Can someone send me some link to where to buy from please I don’t mind waiting for it to be shipped to the UK.
Any help and advise is much appreciated.
thanks
Jamie

If you try to do this yourself, you will need a couple of specialty tools. Some shops make their own. If I were in your position I would track down a good FD shop, or very good transmission shop. Either of those can source the OE replacement parts you'll need.

At the end of the day the FD's transmission is a pretty standard manual gearbox. A competent shop that specializes in manual transmissions would not have any problems doing a rebuild.

They may also be better at sourcing parts as well.

I've done some minor things in a transmission (5th gear synchro) and there's a LOT of skill needed to fully rebuild a transmission as well as special tools. I would only tackle it if you had another transmission to get the car running. This is one of those projects that ends up in a For Sale ad with an FD with a transmission scattered all over your garage.

Mazda has no kits, its all sold individually. the aftermarket has bearing kits. even at my prices, the parts for a full rebuild is about the same money as a brand new transmission from Mazda.

these transmissions are kind of in the middle as far as difficulty, the miata/1st gen Rx7 is easier, the Rx8 is harder. you need some special tools, the Mazda set is a really long puller, there is also a really long socket, the book, a hammer.

that being said if you really want to do it, try doing 5th gear on the FD, its an easy way to start
