Question Balancing counterweight for flywheel: exclusive to rotary's or general knowledge?

Just wanted to ask a question before i send my 7 to the shop for a new clutch and flywheel.

I've searched about flywheels for rx7s and know that a counterweight must be purchased if ur buying an aluminum flywheel to balance the rotors. I just wanted to know if this counterweight will throw off mechanics if i take the parts to them? There isnt a rotary specialist here so im banking on taking it to a decent shop here in town. Will they know what they're doing? Is a rotary's tranny different from one of a conventional piston engin?

you need a rear counterweight off an S5 or S6(FD) engine, they came with the automatic cars or can be purchased from the dealership or mazdatrix if you don't have one already. bolt the flywheel to the counterweight(it doesn't matter which spot you bolt it on) and it should already be balanced to work with your motor. giving it to them bolted together will reduce the risk of them wondering what to do with it and buggering something up. the flywheel/counterweight is simply held on by 1 large nut.

The post above is correct. This is corroboration. Aluminum flywheels are balanced until you add the counterweight. You need imbalance. Adding the counterweight provides the necessary imbalance. But you must use the correct counterweight (it matches the rotor weight and front counterweight imbalance -- S5 or S6 will work).

All the shop needs to do it bolt the parts on. They don't need to know anything special. The orientation of the flywheel doesn't matter, relative to the counterweight or the eccentric shaft. The orientation of the counterweight to the eccentric shaft does matter, but there is a key, so you can't do it wrong.

I hope that covers your question. If it doesn't, ask your question more clearly.

I just put the ACT 9.5 lb flywheel on my car. Am I missing something here, or is it true that by the time you bolt that 20 lb counterweight to it, it ends up weighing virtually the same as the stocker?

Has anyone compared the weights?
