Badly faded mirrors

'Search' failed me again...

red '95. Mirrors are faded as hell.

Can I restore them without repainting them? Can they be repainted? I've heard this is a common problem with our cars?

I would just repaint them if they are that bad. It wont be that expensive.

Yeah, repainting would be the best bet for the long run. For a quick temporary fix, use a red colored wax on them. It should hold the color for about two weeks.

Yeah that works pretty well, but you might as well get them repainted, since it shouldnt be too great of an expense.

dont use any color coated wax! i used it on my 87 turbo ii back in the day. When i got the car repainted the new paint did not set up properly, because of the colorcoated wax. it bonds with you paint and you will have to take the old paint down to the bare metal to get rid of it.

Armor All really improves the color of the faded plastic.
I just painted mine a couple of weeks ago. I'd use a primer for plastic or a coat of red paint for plastic first. That should prevent cracking later. The wing gets it next.

My mirrors were badly faded when I bought my car (VR). Paint on the car was incredible, but mirrors looked pink.
A little polishing compound followed up with some wax did the trick. Wish I had pics to show you, but the mirrors are red again and have stayed that way for over a year now. Of coarse the car spends alot of time under a cover in the garage.
You might try that before trying to repaint them. Much cheaper that way. Polishing (not rubbing) compound can be found at Wal-Mart or any auto parts store for about $2.
