Is bad Compression an obvious thing??

After talking to a friend of mine who is got poor #'s on compression test at RP in texas, I am wondering if it is an obvious thing when one has bad compression?? He only has 1500 on a new motor. I have close to 22k miles on a a year and a few months old street ported motor. It has ALWAYS cranked up immediately and idled smooth. I did however break it in for 4,000 miles and 3 and a half months before getting on the boost.....YES 4,000 miles Literally !! I also use Mystery Oil as a premix. So, I was wondering if I could be getting low compression even without obvious symptoms. Thanks guys !

Mine had low compression #'s of around 6.3-6.5 on both rotors.

I still had amazing power. 40-70 times in 3rd at WOT was 5 - 5.5 secs. On a paticular Saturday morning I had it up to 145 and occasionally got to 5-6k for the rest of the day. Sunday afternoon on my way home from my parents house she decided that she had had enough.

The only symptom that alerted me that my time might be near was that with the AC on I had to ride the clutch in 1st somewhat.

Later...Scott

Yeah, that's consistent with what my friend had told me. I do not see any of those symptoms....and hope to not see any for another 90k miles hehe! He has problems starting his car when warmed up and also kills when the AC is on. He just got back from RP and they said he has 4.6 compression on front and rear rotors !! Even with this, he put down 313 rear wheel at 12 psi. His engine only has 1500 miles on it and Ari told him that he needs new rotor housings.

If you're not getting the obvious signs, especially sluggish cranking, then you're fine. I'm curious, who built that "new" motor that your friend has? And were the housings and rotors actually "new"? Did you two guys get your motors from the same source?
