Question backfiring

I test drove a '95 with a few performance mods.
the performance CPU was not hooked up and the car backfired a couple of times. I was wondering what causes this and if it's normal. The car has 45k miles and isn't driven on a normal basis. Will the performance CPU help this condition.

If the pre-cat has been removed, you'll notice some backfiring. Shouldn't be too excessive though.

The performance CPU will make it worse. Backfire is unburned fuel in the exhaust. Because the rotary can be destroyed if detonation occurs, the stock ECU dumps a lot of fuel into the motor, and sometimes all the fuel is not consumed, thus causing the backfiring. Thats why our little 1.3L motors need a 20 gal. gas tank. Also, if the timing has been retarded too much, it can cause backfire. However that is unlikely because the timing is electronicly controlled by the ECU, unless you have the Power FC, then you can adjust the timing.

It depends on the aftermarket ECU that is being used. As Swamp RX-7 mentioned, if there is a reprogrammable ECU, there are a few steps than can be done to reduce it... Usually, it's not worth the hassle.

Backfiring can shoot out some nasty flames. With the PFC just turn the Fuel Decel up.
