Automatic Transmission Yay or Nay?

I am currently looking to buy an RX-7 and i found one for a fair price but the only thing is the auto tranny. I really want a manual because that is what ive been around so i was wondering some opinions. Which is better for handling the power and driveability? and if i wanted to do a swap what would the labor and prices include? Thanks in advance!

IMHO, an automatic is a waste of time in the FD. Mazda added it to sell more cars. Autos typically have a lower sales value as well.

You can do a 5-speed swap, but it's a pretty serious undertaking and you need quite a few parts to do the job. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

If you really want a manual, buy a manual, period. Don't buy the first RX-7 that pops up. Read my how to buy an FD guide -

If you wait for one to show up for sale in your town, you likely won't get what you want. With these cars, you want to get what you want, not half-*** it.

Take it from me u wanna stay away from the automatic. I made the mistake of buying an automatic and 3 months into having the car drivin about 7-8 times the tranny took a dump and 6 months later and a couple thousand still dont have mine ready. but i am also droping a t60-1 turbo in it

I bought an auto for the only fact that it was way less than any manual within two states, low mileage and bone stock.

Spite a few flaws I was able to change it over to a manual in about a month, but I have a full shop of tools to work with. I also dropped damn near $3k doing the swap but tossed in some other bits and chunks along the way. In the long run, I spent about the same as I would have buying a manual straight out, but I also feel my car was less abused than most manuals I looked at on the market.
