Automatic to 5 Speed Conversion Info

I started a section on my website about the auto to 5 speed conversion - http://jrx7.rx7life.com/auto5speedswap.htm . It's a work in progress so it will be updated from time to time as I get info from other people's experiences with the swap. If you would like to add to it please let me know. There is also a new mailing list for auto FD owners. It's a Yahoo group, ATFD@yahoogroups.com .

BTW, how much is George charging for the rewiring? I talked to him at length about this before, but he did not have a price then. I would take mine to him, but I'm in Texas.

Oops, it should be fixed now. Where are you having it done?

I think MZM in Austin, but not sure - I will have to recheck on their pricing. Thats why I was asking on just having George do the wiring, since everything else pretty much bolts up and any decent shop can handle that part.

Meanwhiles, if I go with a stock flywheel, is the counter weight 'built in' already (meaning I don't have to buy another counter weight). I've heard conflicting stories.

I'm under the understanding that if I go with a light weight flywheel, I can reuse the auto counter weight correct?

Ltr!

Oh, you forgot the companion flange on the diff. The holes on the auto diff companion flange is slightly differnt then the manual flange, so the manual drive shaft cannot bolt up. Maybe widen it abit like I heard somewhere? Maybe just better to get the correct flange.

I know how some people feel about Protech in Austin, but I think that one of the owners converted a Manual tranny to an Auto tranny for his sister.

I know that this is a great travesty and goes against everything that is good and holy in the world, but nonetheless you might want to give them a call about what exactly would need to be done.

but I'm sure that MZM will also know what is involved.

I swapped the entire diff out so the flange wasn't a problem for me. George says that the holes can be enlarged on the stock auto diff to fit the 5 speed driveshaft.

So whats the scoop on Protech - and where in Austin are they? Need to have options, hehe. Only thing I don't know is the wiring. Everything else is pretty much a bolt on affair.

TIA!

I think I remember Goblin saying to stay away from Protech. I think he had his swap at MZM, but I could be mistaken. Apologies all if so.

Yeah, MZM is where Goblin had his done. Supposedly there is someone else that does it in Dallas, not RP though. RP will not do it.

Nice website Jr... Hopefully it will give me the courage to attempt this on mine

Either that or I'll just build out the auto tranny

The factory ECU needs to be replaced, but obviously if you have a stand alone like the PFC then you have nothing to worry about. The PFS PMC piggybacks the stock ECU and should not have to be reprogrammed but you might want to verify that with a little dyno time.

Why would you replace the ECU? They are the same part number aren't they? The auto tranny has it's own ECU that sits next to the main ECU. I may be wrong, But looking at my car that is what I see. I have the auto harness from the engine plugged in to the auto harness on the dash with a 5 speed man. I bought it that way. ECU is the origional.

Way to bring back a 3 year old thread.

And the ECU does need to be replaced.

This is where I got my basic info on the swap.

http://www.jrx7.com/auto5speedswap.htm

This one has some good info also.

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...nsmission+swap

Its pretty straight forward once you get into it. If it isn't in those posts it can be found by using the search function up top.
