Talking automatic to 5 speed conversion

sup? I originally joined this club cuz i was planning on buying a turbo II but i have saved up some more cash and after i sell my corrado, ill have almost enough $$$ to buy a 93+ rx-7. however, ive noticed that the type im looking for ( around 65k miles bone stock ) with a manual tranny is around $16k. Thats out of my price range so i was thinking of getting an auto and converting it. Has anyone done this before? If so, how much did it cost or would you guys speculate the cost to be? my brother is a mechanic and worked at a volvo/mazda dealership so he'd be doing all the labor. i was planning on converting my corrado to 5 speed and it would've totaled around $600 shopping around for parts on ebay, cars parting out, etc. im also thinking if im going to convert it to a manual, cant i just convert it to a 6 speed? or will this be to costly?

p.s. sorry if this ? came up before. i cancelled broadband so i can save up for my car and you guys know how much 56k sucks

any advice is appreciated

r1 is for the 93 and r2 is for the 94,95s. Same thing though. do a search, it will answer your questions bc I know this has been talked about a lot lately.

if you can only "barely" afford to buy an FD, don't buy it at all. These cars can/will suck amazing amounts of money, even if you keep it stock. Don't forget you are buying a 9 year old car that has likely been driven hard. Lots of things will need to be replaced and parts and labor are very expensive. BTW, the auto to 5-speed conversion is several thousand dollars and apparently is a big PITA. You are better off buying a manual to start with.

Don't buy it if you can barely afford it. Switching an auto to a 5 spd is a pain in the ***. There are a bunch of problems especially with the clutch pedal that people run in to. I've seen a bunch of Civic and Integras who have done this....if the pedal is off by just a couple of degrees it seriously affects engagement.

Don't do it! I can already tell you are not ready for the financial dedication that this requires.

I've never heard of anyone having problems with clutch pedal engagement on an auto-5 speed swapped FD. Check out my website for more info on the swap - http://jrx7.rx7life.com/auto5speedswap.htm There are plenty of other people who have done it and are very happy with the results.

Go with the mr2, my friend. I did. It's too bad you didn't see when I was selling my FD for $13k. It was in near-mint condition...someone got a hell of a deal.

If you can "really really stretch it" to $14k, don't bother. Finding an R1 costing only 14k will most probably require another $2k or more in misc. fixes a short while down the road. And forget finding one with 60k on the clock if your budget is 14k.

Almost any FD you find used will need a rebuild within a short amount of time. If you are lucky to find a used one with a "fresh" motor it won't be for 14k.

Expect for everything to cost with a car and rebuild about 16-17k and that's just for starters.
