^^^ Transmission does not work on vacuum. It is computer controlled.

You can check the transmission computer codes by using a jumper in the diagnostics box similar to checking the ECU codes. Codes will be flashed using the Hold light instead of the Check Engine light. Directions are in the FSM. Curiously the Automatic Transmission section is the BIGGEST section of the FSM (section K I think) and it is usually left out of most online copies.

You can also reset the transmission computer (and clear a poosible limp mode) the same way you reset the ECU. Unhook the ground, turn the ignition to on, and push the brake pedal for 10 seconds.

Personally, I find that when the transmission starts acting up its usually an internal problem and you either need to repair or replace them.

Do you have a FSM to check all the problems against? I mean, I just reviewed mine for this post and...there are dozens of checks to do....

The FSM literally has entire SECTIONS devoted to this. Shoot...codes 44, 45, 46, and 47 all deal with what you describe.
