Oem mazda internals all the way. Definitely the apex seals. Mine are the 2 piece 2mm design and they are holding this power level fine, 9k miles and counting
Best place to order from is ray crowe at malloy mazda, 888 533 3400.

I've built motors with Stock Mazda kits and I tried an Atkins kit one time and never looked back.
By far the Atkins kits are much better!
All my motors get built using the Atkins Master rebuild kits, better price and I think they are better quality for the most part.
93Red, pm me if you want to get a kit from Atkins....I'll be placing an order soon, I could save you some money on shipping possibly.

if you can get a similar kit from mazda for the same price as an atkins kit go with mazda, no offense to atkins but the OEM seals are better but also cost more.
in order of quality:
#1) OEM
#2) Atkins
#3) Rotary Aviation
as you might guess the price is also the same relative to quality, atkins and RA kits still hold up well but OEM has withstood the test of time and durability. i use Atkins kits in my rebuilds, they do the job just fine but if someone wants to shell out more i have no problem using OEM or if they are severely budgeted i could save them a little and use RA but i think the RA kit is a little sketchy, i have used the McMaster Carr coolant seals and they do have a tendency to leak small amounts of coolant into the engine on occasion and the apex seals are very rigid and scar rotor housings reducing the life of the motor, i won't even get into their apex seal springs.... i would rather reuse OEM springs than use their springs.

actually mazda is now using a single piece apex seal again. with scribed corner. they've updated the 3rd gen apex seals, or possibly parts binned with rx8's. =-)

well i imagine since ray is a major oem dealer to many he has alot in stock and probably has quite a few of the old version. if you ask ray, and tell him to use the original part number in the parts fiches most of us have. it's got like 3 superceeding *sp? part number for it. i just put mine together about 2 mo ago and i had 6 1 piece. ther's like a scribed mark diagnal across where the old single corner piece used to be... but it's a solid piece as far as i can tell. *now there is a possibility it's still 2 piece but they come fac assebled now... possibility but it looks like a complete one piece to me, i was baffled for 2 days b/c i our parts catalog here at work (i work at mazda dealer) shows the original 3 piece and that's what my 7 has when i dissaenbled it =-)
go figure...

i think people are confusing 2 piece seals with 1 pieces seals. a 1 piece seal will not have a corner boot, a 1 piece seal will not seal nearly as well as a 2 piece seal since the width of the seal to irons will always vary so they would all be a minimal width or need trimming allowing for expansion also.
i have never heard of mazda using a 1 piece seal.
Nat6c, that is a 2 piece seal, no seals are scribed, it was just preassembled.

Speaking of Rebuilds, what is the general perception about Pineapple Racing, i know that they use pretty much all OEM stuff exept for the water seals i beleive(i know its a seal somewere that they tested for 7 years before selling it), and they like to use brand new rotor housings which for what i understand is the only way to go. Thanks in advance

I believe the scribed mark he's refering too is where the coner seal is glued to the apex seal (two piece). I bought mine in February and are the newer two piece seal. I'm unsure if this is the same as the Rx8 seal.
