AST....needed or not????

I have seen M2 performance offer an AST elimination kit while others like Rotary performance offer an aluminum AST replacement. Is the AST really needed?? I like the idea of freeing up some under hood space but not at the expenses of frying my motor. Any comments?

thanks
Kelvin

I was thinking about getting rid of it but I thought just in case it would be good to have. Here is a link to this guy trying to fab his own. They look really good and when I get some more mod cash then I am going to look into it.
