Anyone try the Mazdaspeed LSD
Anyone try the Mazdaspeed LSD
I am trying to find more info usually Mazdaspeed stuff keeps to the spirit of the car for which they are designed. So I am wondering is the Mazdaspeed LSD streetable or is it loud, a PITA and kicks you in the butt everytime you step on the gas like the Tomei one I tried.
Also, if the answer is no can anyone recommend a nice quiet diff?

I run an S4 T2 diff that I had cryo-treated and I love it. Quiet and very strong
On 400+ rwhp cars they can and will break on a hard shift, so even for guys that aren't drag racing it's worth deep six'ing it.
S4 T2 is strong, quiet, cheap and rebuildable. You can also change the lockup characteristics by shimming the clutches. If you're road coarse racing the stock torsion is a better technology for cornering over any of the clutch style LSDs, but the spider gears are a weak point and can break. I stripped my spider gears on the highway in 3rd gear when I accelerated over a slightly wavy point on the road. In it's defense it's had a hard life, and had quite a bit of slop in the backlash. A new torsion with a nice tight backlash would probably hold up better, then again the spider gears are independent of the ring and pinion so it's hard to say if that would make much difference. In any case I would wait for the stock torsion to give out before replacing it, unless it already has quite a bit of slop, then you can either get new bearings and set the backlash tighter, or replace it.
how much power is your car making and what are you using the car for. drag, track, Weekend cruiser?
S4 T2 works great and is a cheaper option and you can rebuild them for cheap. forget about the torsen they will break with over 450whp and a good launch..i would look into a Kazz, OS giken or Carbonetics.
i just installed the carbonetics carbon LSD but still under brake-in period so i can't give you much feed back but i have heard nothing but good things
As far as the noise goes i can't give you any advise there my car is super loud

I have a mazdaspeed 1.5 way. It is normally very quite driving around. As speed goes up, I get some whining but I am not convinced that it is a diff problem. I have been running it for 2 years and it is SUPER mild. Almost so mild that I cannot tell a difference over the stock diff.
However, any time that I run a gymkhana or autox type event, the tires spin evenly, they lock up nice and together. I am finishing up my 35r build so I cannot say how it handles HP past stock.

I can only comment on benefit in autox. No right-left wobbling on acceleration due to uneven traction, whether due to load transfer or surface differences. Can get on the throttle earlier on corner exit and car feels more solid in general under acceleration. Minor drawback is on corner entry rotation but can be compensated by drivers inputs (a bit less brake trailing), stiffening rebound in the rear shocks and rear alignment set to loose up the rear a bit.

Thats what I was told. I have pictures somewhere... I have seen the Mazdaspeed diff for sale used all the time and, from what I remember, it has always been a 1.5 way. Then again, I could have been scammed from who I got it from and it could be something else. However, it looks nothing like the stock diff so.... I dunno. I wish I had something more aggressive though. Need to get my car running before I worry about that.
Hey bewtew and hungry 4 piston. what kind of power are you making? Do you drag race the car? Have you launched the car on a slick? Just trying to get some more info on the carbonetic lsd. I was looking into them. Thanks Justin
Carbonetic - non-adjustable, what you get is what you have
Kaaz - can be adjusted; way setting if you have the necessary parts and also in lock %. Comes 100% lock from factory, 65% and 35% also possible by swapping the plate positions around. Requires pulling the LSD out and disassembling it to adjust
OS Giken - fully adjustable at the track by just dropping the rear cover and being able to reach into it; 1.1, 1.5, or 2 way, and also the lockup timing
you decide .....
