anyone seen this car? ram air intake? wtf?

I stumbled across this 93 "R1" RX-7 on eBay, and it is the super rare automatic R1 that everyone is looking for

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2421203071

What amazed me is the pics of the engine compartment. It appears to have some sort of ram air intake straight into the second turbo, using the braided steel hose routed into the drivers side nose of the car....wtf?

I just hope there is a filter of some sort attached to the end of that hose!

Never seen anything like it. Don't see how exactly it would work either...

17,500 for an auto? Hmm I guess.

CASH ONLY? He wants someone to show up with a suitcase full of money? Something tells me something is wrong with the car.

Perhaps it is part of his security system?

$17,500 in my opinion is a little high but who knows. The front bumper is awfully wavey looking. That intake is just a piece of work also let me tell ya.

Funny how he mentions EVERY OTHER performance mod, but neglects to talk about the weirdest one

Notice the primary turbo has a simple cone filter!

Possiby purposes of cable:
-enables car to be locked to bike racks
-can be held above roof to cross deep streams
-like me he used zero o-gauge cable to relocate his battery.

if you look VERY closely, you can seea y-pipe, so the twins are still on, and you can see an HKS style filter, angled inward, presumable attached only to the primary turbo. Then, the guy found what must be the worlds largest-diameter braided-stainless covered hose, and simply stuffed it into the coupler on the secondary-turbo inlet pipe (how would you clamp soft hose to a rubber coupler?), then ran it down to whatever gap is created by the FMIC/upride rad. combo... heck, it might even be BETWEEN the IC and rad. You're guess is as good as mine wither theres a filter on there.

i wouldn't touch this car w/ a 1- foot pole, but this actually might work ok if theres a filter on it.

So I have seen something like that intake hose on an MX-3 once...Basically the intake has a cone which sucks from an opening in the top only. A 3" flex hose was attached to the cone filter and routed to the front bumper...the front bumper has a 3" opening in it where they used 3" a speaker port and attached the flex hose to that. The speaker port was epoxied into place...When they started the car you could hear the intake sucking from the hole in the front of the car...if you put your hand over the opening it would be like a vacuum and would eventually choke up the car like it was going to die...didn't keep my hand over it that long though. I thought about something like this for the 7 but never followed through with it...probably would solve the problem of sucking in hot under hood temps. What do you think?

Yep, a lot of the single turbo guys do something like that. Here is the RX-7.com drag car with a ram intake to their single turbo:

I often thought of doing something similar. I read about some of the FC guys doing it. They mentioned that they got a lot more flow, however their filters got dirty about 10 times as fast. I guess there is always a trade off.

FMIC, stock radiator, and license plate blocking the bumper opening. What a great setup.

Actually, the stock radiator has very good cooling properties. The problem is just the plastic end tanks. If your stock radiator isn't clogged, you won't notice any temp difference moving to an aftermarket one. You'll just have the piece of mind of not having the plastic end tanks.

Yep. Stocker in mine (though replaced once a couple years ago due to a leak at the seam). Cools just fine.

I understand that the stocker cools well enough. However, I can't understand how folks will spend thousands of dollars upgrading their FD and look right past the $360 radiator.

I replaced my stock with a stock mount PWR and noticed a BIG difference at the track.

All together now...TOP 10 REASONS WHY THIS IS NOT AN R1:

10) It has a cruise control actuator
9) It has cruise control buttons on the steering wheel
8) Love those base model seats
7) err where's the R1 lip? err where's any lip?
6) Strut bar? Hey maybe he sold the OE R1 bar to get the bling bling aftermarket bar?
5) I'd bet good money there's only one oil cooler

4), 3), and 2) Not specifically R1 related but consider all the other reasons to run screaming from this sale: for example...mystery intake, interesting wiring connections on top of radiator, no working A/C - notice A/C dryer lines: connectors just hanging there, and CASH ONLY?

and the number 1 answer is:
1) It's an Automatic
