Anyone know what this is?

Hey guys,

I got under my car today to take off my exhaust (broken exhaust hanger on the old exhaust, using this as an excuse to get a rb dual tip). while I was under the car though, looking at the underside of the car from the bottom up (laying on the floor looking up), on the right hand side (driver's side) of the rear differential above the axel there is a round cylinder that has a hose attached to it, and this hose is not attached to anything on my car and the hose looked like it was split into 4 ends (take a look at the second picture). The car started and ran fine, but I'm not sure what this thing is or if that hose is supposed to be attached to anything. The first pic is from me laying down on the ground looking at the cylinder with the hose attached, the second pic shows how the hose is split (sorry it's fuzzy). Anyone have any ideas on this??

gotcha, thanks man. sorry, force of habit, I've always been "skooled" that non-connected hoses were bad. thanks again
