Yeah ... when thos ******* stripped my car they rested the *** end on a 5-gal bucket that punctured the tank, so I had to take it off. Actually, I didn't even notice the puncture -- but they broke the gas door open (steal the gas?) so I had to take it out to see what's inside. Here's all that you have to do ...
Depressurize the fuel system. Find instructions for that on www.robrobinette.com It's also recommended that you have the tank near empty.
Open the gas door and remove the two screws beside the filler neck. Also, that assembly is grounded so look under the 1/4 panel and free the ground wire.
Open the hatch, pull the spare cover up and take the fuel pump cover off. Free the harnesses, and I think it's 3 lines you have to unclamp. Remove the fuel pump assembly ... or leave it in ... I took it out.
You'll probably want to remove the catback and the heat shield around the end of the catback, but that may not be crucial. I'm not sure -- my exhaust was stolen, too, and at the time I didn't need to take it off.
The last part is the two straps that hold it on. They're just held on by two bolts each. Take those out. It's a good idea to have something under the tank at the time that barely allows it to initially fall as you take the straps off. Then after it's out it can rest on that and then you can have someone help you (or do it yourself like me) remove it completely from under the car. You just don't want that thing to fall on you or the ground hard.
Putting it back in was pretty easy. I didn't have any trouble holding it up myself and bolting the straps back on.
