it just flooded one day after it sat for like 2 days. then it started getting a rough start. i unflooded it put new plugs in it and it still does it. i have to hold the clutch and gas down to get it to start up. it wont start with just the clutch in. with the clutch in and the gas floored it starts but shoots out a lot of smoke like gas smell and the rpms are slugish for alittle bit. after it warms up the car is perfect vacum, has good idle right around 800. boost is good 10-8-10 drives fine, but once i turn it off and let it sit for about 30 minutes or somtimes longer or shorter it dosent want to start unless i hold the clutch and gas at the same time. thanks for all your help i really apprecite it

 

What colour is the smoke
When was the last time you cleaned your injectors ?

 

shot a big black cloud firt then alittle white until it warmed up. just put an injector cleaner in about 1 week ago after the first flood. the car has 120,000 miles on it but dont know about the motor. 3 rd owner of the car motor runs fine though good vacum 16-18. get good boost 10-8-10. idle is fine once it starts right around 800 rpm never bounces. just struggles to start

 

Does it smell of coolant? White smokle could be coolant going through your o-ring seals
If so you might want to do the champagne test

 

Sounds like you might have a leaking injector that just dribbles gas out after you shut it down.

The FSM has a procedure to test this by inserting a fuel pressure gauge inline with the fuel line and watching to see if it holds pressure after the fuel pump is shut off. You could also pull both rails off, prime the system and look for visible leaks. You'll probably end up sending them out to be serviced.

 

i dont think it is coolant because it goes away like if it were cold start up. only last for about 30 seconds (the white smoke). i was thinking of a leaky injector and will look into how to test for that. ty

My second Gen did that all the time. But only in the winter. I would drive it a bit on a short errand come back out and try to start it and no luck. It would just spin. First time it happened I was on a date. Lame!!! I took it to Mazda. They charged me 140.00. Changed the fuel filter and said see ya. Well i didn't make that mistake again. Next time it happend i messed with it for about an hour. I know i had spark and i know i had air. It was the fuel i was wondering about. So i disconnected the Fuel line in the engine bay and turned it over. It fired right up and then died. So i put the fuel line back on aand it started right up. I then knew then that i had a flooding problem due to a bad injector. I had no money so lived with it four about 4 years until i sold the car.

 

Have you checked the engine codes? (Even if your check engine light is not on, you chould check for codes). I had very similar experience when my Coolant Temp Sensor went out. The car kept flooding when I would leave it and it cooled down after a drive. Essentially, the engine thinks that it is starting up while warm when it is actually dead cold and it is pumping too much fuel in.

I also thought it was leaky injectors, but a leak-down test showed that they were fine. Replacing the Coolant Temp Sensor made the problem go away.

back again for help. unflooded it today and put a set of 2 7's and 2 9's. instead of all 4 9's. the car started right up no problems drove it alittle got gas to check the milage (never turned the car affraid it wouldnt start). the milage was 20 to 21 miles per gallon mostly freeway. when i got home shut the car off put my new liscenswe plates on and tried to start it samething wouldnt start pushed the gas peddle and the clutch in and it started. let it run a bit then turned it off again counted to 10 and then started it back up with just the clutch and it started justb alittle rough not bad. drove the car again around town ran perfect 16-18 on vacum idle stayed right at 800 rpm. please any help.

 

also is it bad to start the car the way i am doing it with the gas pedal to the floor and the clutch to the floor. the car is also in nutral when doing this

 

Funny you should mention you used an injector cleaner, I'm guessing you did this just before this started happening. Perhaps the injector cleaner only partially cleaned your injectors and they or one of them is now leaking. ? ? ? Try some more injector cleaner (to finish the job) and check for leak down of the fuel system. Jack

Yes, compression check your engine to see if it's the engine or injectors.

 

starting with the gas pedal to the floor is what you do for a flooded car - it prevents fuel from being injected into the chamber. if you are having to do this then your engine is getting too much fuel on the startup.

again, did you check your engine codes? this may tell you straight up what is wrong.

ok checked for engine codes and it came back with nothing engine light never came on. now what could it be? i am leaning toward leaky injector now because after i unflood it and put new spark plugs in it starts right up with no roughness at all. then when i shut it down and let it sit for acouple of minutes it wont start. if it was the motor it wouldnt start smooth after a unflood i would amagine ? i would have thought it would have a rough start no matter either way if the motor was shot

 

It has to be the injectors, not the compression of his motor. If the motor were actually "blown," it would exhibit signs of engine failure such as a rough idle and low vaccum. If the coolant o-rings were in fact also blown, it would probably not start at all, not to mention his coolant level sensor would go off rather frequently if it were a heavy leak.

Low compression will cause hard starts. I had to do the exact same thing to get my FD to start with my old engine. Turns out I had two chipped / broken apex seals. It ran perfectly once it was running, although I did have pretty low engine vacuum (~10" Hg). You really should do a compression check. If it's not that, it sure sounds like a leaking injector.
