I think mine may be on it's way out and I have the opp. to by a few of them at a decent price. Do they go bad after sitting disconnected from the AC system ?? Thanks for any info. on this.

The only way to find out is put it on and try it out. If the clutch is still operational and it wasn't sitting out in the weather for six months it should be fine. When you have it recharged they will check all the seals (o'rings), so you might want to replace those too. Then they will evac the system, pulling a vacuum will tell if there are any leaks and suck all the garbage out, then make sure they add an oil charge to lube up everything internally then they will do a recharge. You may need to replace the evaporator and orfice tube as well. The evaporator gets replaced every several years as needed and the orfice is just an inline filter.
If you have an older R12 system you can have the system retrofitted to the newer R134a system. It will cost a bit more but worth it in the long run. Obsolete R12= $49+/lb and R134= $15/lb
Hope this helps some.
