Anyone ever rebuild there alternator?

My alternator just bit the dust and I'm looking to rebuild it if possible. Where can you find brushes for it and how much?

I had my local NAPA rebuild it for me. Total cost was $139 with labor. I probably could have tackled it myself, but I figured for that low I would let them have at it. I'd never rebuilt an alternator before, so I would have been flying blind. I'm sure I could have done it if I'd gone slow, but NAPA rebuilt mine in a day after the parts got there (3 days total).

None of the part stores in town had the parts I needed (plus I didn't know what was broken), and to have them special order all of the internals was going to cost around $100, so for $50 I had it done by a pro. It works great now, no problems for almost 3 months.

If you have the time, Gotham Racing can rebuilt it and polish it at the same time:

That is one of those deals best left to an alternator shop.

They can diagnose exactly what is wrong, as opposed to you having to buy ALL the parts. Often is is quite cheap to have an alternator rebuilt.
The alternator in my old Triumph TR7 was notorious for failing, the rectifier packs in them were just not able to take any heat. At the time, it was a $350 alternator new (must have had the blessing of the Queen or something!) and I routinely got it rebuilt for $79.
