Anyone Else Do This?
Voododoo:
The hood latch is very delicate. Mine randomly broke off the hood last summer. Fortunantly the break was in a fixable location-one that could be reached by a welder. However, if it was a little further back there would have been no way to repair it. the hood is made up of two parts-the top cover and the frame. The latch is rivoted in BETWEEN them. The mounting plate for the latch is bigger than the hole in the hood frame so that if the rivots fail the latch will get hung up on the frame, preventing the hood from blowing open. When they manufacture the hood they rivot the latch onto the frame THEN weld the frame to the top/exterior piece. The downside is you cannot repair damage to the metal latch that is out of view without tearing apart the hood.
The long winded point is-I wouldn't drive around with it partly open because any movement due to bumps may damage the whimpy POS latch which, depending on the location of the break, could in turn cost you $400 for a new hood+paint.
