Anybody get a recent reman? Was it any good?
I heard from a reliable source that most if not all the remans coming from Mazda are POS's. Has anybody gotten one recently? I'm on the verge of taking a gamble and obtaining one from Ray over at Malloy... I've got limited budget to spend on fixing my FD.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

I woulnt take a gamble if $$ were an issue? Just save son $$ & send your motor to reputable shop of your choice. Some shops start of with a reman depending on the condition.

If you are on a limited budget, here are some options:
1. Talk to Kevin http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/

I was considering bringing my car to Kevin, but it'd take 4 days for me to get the car down to TN (and back if I towed the car myself), and unfortunately I'm about as low on spare time as I am on $$$...
TK7, be wary of any dealer offering an FD.

the remans should be fine. Kevin doesn't do anything but repair engines. You have to pull it and ship the engine down.. he'll rebuild it and send it back...
If you do it all yourself and you have the tools, it shouldn't run you more the price of 2k. providing you don't have a housing, rotor, eshaft, bearings issues.

I had bought a re-man engine from the dealership ( ron tonkin mazda in portland or. ) that was a lemon, but at least it had a warranty and they replaced it for free. the new one i got is excellent and running fine. this was about a month ago. from what i have seen the newer re-mans are made with new parts as a new company is building them. the build quality on these newer engines is way better than the last place that was doing them.....

Yeah from what I seen & heard remans are definitely a crap shoot. I wouldnt take a gamble on a reman if $ was an issue, just spend the xtra $ and have the shop of choice build you a motor. I'm like you and many others my financial status are limited. I spent the xtra $ for a rebuild knowing exactly what was done to it, not to mention I got a street port along with other reliabilty mods. Do a search on remans you might be shocked of what you see & read. Just my .02c

Seriously, you don't really have anything to talk about yet...give it 10-30k and we'll see.
Also, Ray doesn't have remans of his own...he gets them from the same place everyone else does. HE would likely have no additional control over the quality of said remans, that is determined by the plant that assembles them. The exception is when the reman program runs out of cores, and mazda imports new cores straight from japan.

I actually have a 94 here right now doing install on it.
Really, the remans are a great source of parts, but I would never put one in and run it as-is. Their signature is a TON of white or pink sealant on the oilpan, which gets inside and gets clogged on the oil pickup tube (guy above who posted his died of oil starvation, pay attention here). They also blob it in other places, including under the crank pulley bolt on the eshaft.
I once had a low mile FD reman brought to me from a mostly stock car with a blown front rotor. Upon disassembly I found a 9.7:1 89-91 nonturbo engine rotor in the front, and of course that's why it broke the seals there.
I've also seen remans with double side seal springs installed, and one had a missing side seal altogether.
Here's a couple of posts illustrating the reman quality from another builder.

Also, here is a post illustrating the quality being given to the rx-8 guys UNDER DEALER WARRANTY NO LESS. This guy is now on his 4th engine (3 remans in a row) and still does not have a driveable car.

Wow, 200 miles, that must be some kinda record.

Actually that's incorrect. It clearly states on my website that I offer remove/install service on top of the standard shortblock engine rebuild for an extra $1000 above whatever the cost of the rest of the build is. Most of my work is shortblocks shipped in and shipped out, but I do get some R&R's too.

That's what I thought especially after he assured me the REMAN'S were good that and alot of other positive response's about the latest REMAN'S on these fourm's made me think I was getting a good deal. What I ended up getting was a REMAN ENGINE assembled buy a bunch of Monkeys who didn't have a clue as to what they were doing so it was doomed 2 fail before reaching your magical 200 mile mark.Be serious you can't say the ENGINE's are fine when you've only got 200 mile's on one. Some ppl have been lucky enough to get REMAN's that were mostly new Internal's but there few and far inbetween. It comes down to whether you wan't to take the gamble and end up spending more as I did or get a quality rebuild done the first time.

I second all that Kevin said about the REMAN'S especially the sealant issues in and around the oilpan I saw Pic's of mine the pickup tube was completely clogged nothing getting through there.
Note I'm not bashing RAY at MALLOY he's a great guy that does great thing's with his price's for part's for the RX-7 community and I'd do business with him again but i'll never buy a REMAN again unless there from Japan or from a Shop.I had to fork down over $1500 for a new set of ROTOR HOUSING'S and a few other thing's.Oh well Iive and learn
f2racer save your money and get quality rebuild from a reputable shop as other's have mentioned
Last I heard RAY was having a sale $580 for new ROTOR HOUSING'S and $400 for 2mm apex seal's i'd jump on that if I were you

used ROTOR HOUSING'S how much$
The previous REMAN ENGINE in my car lost compression around 18K miles fortunately it didn't blow still ran but was a ticking time bomb.On a side note can anyone tell me how much money I can get for ROTOR HOUSING'S that came with the last REMAN I bought? They were deemed servicable by my builder but not appropriate for my need's,might be good for someone who want's to try and build their own Engine or just want's a floorsweeper motor to get their car running again.
I could get pics if anyone's interested there already stored in the boxes that I received from my new ROTOR HOUSING'S.
