What do you do with the VIN stamped into the firewall?

Does anyone know if they've made any structural changes to the FD after 1996? If not you could just strip a 93-95 and upgrade as others suggested.

oh, and anyone know how much a Lancer Evo VII is?
http://www.evolutionimports.com/

If i had a rx-7 i would just try to get a new 99+ motor. There's no emissions in florida so you dont have to worry about it being illegal.

$36,500 for a Lancer Evo VII? I'm guessing it's going to be around $28k when Mitsubishi rolls the US version out in a couple months. You can get one now for 6k more which is not bad, considering 350Zs and S2000s have those crazy markups right now.

It's not state laws that you have to pass, it's US Government laws. Doesn't matter whether your individual state has emissions testing or not, the cars have to pass Government standards (which includes safety/crash test, etc).

crackers,
this is just and idea, because I'm very interested in getting a newer FD maybe a 96-98, or 99-00. Anyway, if I could get the frame of a FD that is in great shape, and maybe the body panels too. could I have a wrecked FD imports with a good motor and tranny... even if the tranny and motor arent ness. from that rx7? basically take a rx7 here that is otherwise a parts car, and pop all the jspec parts in, and have the jspec car shipped in as wrecked title.

just a though. if push comes to shove I've got a buddy in the air force that can get stuff sent over.

I think ijneb was re-asserting what you said, and also letting neptuneRX know that this is a very very old thread.

He posted a newer thread but it was locked and referred to this one as this thread as it already has enough information about importing.

Raising this from the dead.
Read this over, has the possibility of the drivetrain being seperated from the chassis been discussed? I know that this is how they bring the NobleM12 over as a "kit" car. Just wondering.

PLEASE READ THIS POST:

Importing a Jap 7 is something I've worked on for a while. Im in england and military so it theoretically would be cheaper for me.

1. You have to have the letter from Mazda to prove the differences in spec's.

2. The Registered Importer then uses this list to comply with differences.

3. A petition must be entered to the Govt. by the importer.

4. It must meet FEDERAL EPA requirements. Once it passes, if you live in a state where it doesnt matter. If you dont get caught.

5. Chances are you have to prove the car can meet crash testing spec's. Unless Mazda states otherwise you'll have to wreck more than one FD. There are several tests with different sized occupants from different angles.

6. Only the importer can clear the car from customs IF the have the authorization to do so from the Govt.

7. Crackers has the hookup for the importer... But most will charge at least 8000$ for the conversion. Mine may be cheaper since I have an FD already for parts.

8. It could take 6-8 months worth of paperwork battles to get it done.

9. Motorex charges so much because they had to crash test several cars.

10. RHD is legal IF it states so on the ELigibilty list on the NHTSA website. Designated with a (RHD) by the model. Example NISSAN GTS GTR (RHD)

Sorry to keep this thread going but there is a lot of misinformation in here and I dont want people getting their hopes up and smashed.

I am in the process of researching everything I can on this project. The govt will pay for my shipping....all I have to pay is the conversion using parts from my FD in Florida, and taxes/bonds. I have found that a ton of FDs over here are really low mileage. I guess the weather is so crappy they dont ever drive them?! Ive seen 93 Type Rs in Competition Yellow Mica w/33,000 miles for 11000 USD. Most have modifications and body kits. So the temtation is definitely there. Fighting this battle is going to be long and difficult to deal with. Most of all time consuming.

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/

There is a petition for NON-US 93-95 RX7s already authorized. Problem is as I have checked with the Reg. Importer it is for LHD. So apparently someone brought in a LHD FD from somewhere. They would have to prove that it could meet crash testing requirements. This is where I am stuck as of now.

It is DOCKET NUMBER 4578. Read it, but realize its only for LHD FDs.

MAYBE if enough people bug mazda for the letter.... Anyone got a lead on this? Hell i'll do it.

I talked to Sean Morris (guy who petitioned for the GT-R) about this and he said when someone tried this, he got a letter back from Mazda saying there were definate differences between LHD and RHD RX-7s. You should definately try though and I hope you have good luck.

I think it's definitely doable, but would take a LOT of work and time, and def. a lot of $$ for research, crash testing, and the legalizing conversion work. Even if a company came up w/ the desire to do this, I highly doubt they'd have that many buyers tho. Look at ppl on the forum...trying to pick up FDs for $8K - $10K. I just don't see these people shelling out $40K or so for a used 2000 FD. But that's just my opinion...
