Any FD Owners using Royal Purple or Amsoil?

I'm just curious as far as if anyone is using either of the 2 brands and if they recommend one or the other. I might be purchasing an FD within this month and first thing I wanted to do was change the oil.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

10w-40 all the way! syn. oils = bad. since the rotarys have the oil injection system we feed oil in on occasion. syn oils do not burn off completely so you have a deposit left over time more than a mineral based oil. only way to work around this would be to rid the injection system use syn. oil for the lubrication and setup a separate tank with mineral base oil for the injected oil lubrication process. i've talked to many well respected people on here and its been narrowed down to 10w40. everyone has their own opinion and i respect that im just adding my input hopefully im of some help to your questions.

Thank you and I respect your opinion.

So what brand of non-synthetic would you recommend using?

Sigh...

Anyway. I've used Royal Purple for several years. I'll probably be switching to Motul for the next engine. Idemitsu is also another popular brand with the RX7 folks:

Hopefully this doesnt turn into a syn vs dino war

Incomplete burn of synthetic oils was indeed a major concern when Mazda recommended not using synthetics in the rotary many years ago. However, most modern synthetics burn as complete or better than dino oils. Mobile1, RP, and Amsoil all have almost negligable ash content, Valvoline was high a couple years ago last time I checked so I wouldnt use that for fear of plugging a cat.

I have used either Mobile1 or Royal Purple in my 7 the last 5 years, my biggest reason for switching was the high heat generated by the turbos.

I have been using Amsoil in every thing .Starting in 1982 or 1983 .The third gen I have now has the set up to inject twocycle oil into the oil injectors .Becaust no oil formulated for 4 cycle motors is blended to burn .Twocycle is ,so I do not need to debate over dino or syn .For me it is syn for motor oil ,transmission lube, wheel grease ect. The question of which brand is best,I do not know.

I hardly drive my car so putting expensive oil in it is pointless. Ill just use mobil clean 5000 since i heard alot of good things about it.

I use royal purple 10w-30 in the DD though, it gets more of a beating

I tried getting empirical evidence on what oil is best. I failed miserably. Do a search under my name. Lots of opinions and little facts. I'm currently running RP.

While not directly related to rotaries http://www.bobistheoilguy.com has tons of info on Amsoil (many consider it the best oil for any engine, period). Lots of oil analysis charts/info to back it up.

You will pay a premium for Amsoil anything, unless you get the preferred customer discount (take a look at the website). I put Amsoil 5W-30 in my FD and she hasn't spit it back out!

I run AMSOIL series 2000 racing synthetic oil 20W50. This helps with the fuel dilution and hot ambient temps. I run Amsoil 75W90 MT synthetic manual tranny fluid, KAZZ fluid in rear diff (I have a kazz obviously). I run the electromotive tec3R and it cant control the OMP, so i just run a Premix of the Idemitsu rotary fuel lube. Also, I run leaded C16 all the time, and the lead itself acts as a lubricant, do some research. Amsoil has done some testing and Royal purple came out with some of the worst wear testing out of many other leading brands of oils. It actually rated Penzoil synthetic as a top contender, weird. This is just what I prefer to use, but make your own choice, and I am not saying any of the other oils are worse or better. Good luck

I'd like to see the test results you speak of concerning the RP and its terrible wear characteristics. Is it a link off the AMsoil webpage?

Mobil 1 for me. It much easier for me to get around these parts than Royal Purple or the others.

I saw the PDF results of their testing done with RP max-cycle motor cycle oil. Is that the one in which you were referring? Not sure what the difference is between it and the car stuff, maybe David Canitz can shed some light on it.

mobil 1 here...engine runs amazing...absolutely no smoking at all and smooth rpm range..noticed difference in "free feel" of the rpms after moving from 20w-50 to 10w30 mobile 1...Mobil 1 helps keep the engine temperatures down and helps keep the turbos from destroying the oil as quickly...I also run a cup of marvel mystery oil with each gas tank to help blow out built up film caused by synthetic oil

I switched to Royal Purple to check find out what the big deal was. It seems like the engine runs smoother and idles slightly better. I'd like to use RP products for my tranny and diff. Nice stuff.

I ran RP 20w50 for a while. I don't find it to be anything special. I'm gonna switch back to Mobil 1.

The NAPA here in my town carries RP. I'm not sure if all of them carry it. Right now I am debating wether to put synth in my automatic. Looks like the cost will be more than twice that of an oil change. Of course the tranny will problably break before I have to change the fluid again!

Mobil1. The gains weren't 10 hp and a brand new engine It just seems to idle slightly better and run a tad smoother.

Ive gone from Mobil 1 to Royal Purple and now im on Amsoil. I just buy the regular stuff from a tuner shop I used to work at. Its cheaper than royal purple for me. Honostly, after 3k miles no matter what oil you use its gonna come out smelling like pure gasoline.
