Another possible source of clunking, drivetrain play?

Well yesterday I got the 7 up on stands, to finally do a once over of the drivetrain and suspension. Because I am getting nasty clunking noises, lots of shifter movement, where the shifter comes way up under boost, and moves around so badly I can't properly shift under power. I was looking at the powerplant frame, and discovered a catastrophic failure where it bolts to the transmission. I could actually move the transmission up and down by hand, along with the diff. It was pretty bad.

The car was like this when I purchased it. I assumed it was bad motor mounts. I'm ordering a new one, and I'm going to see if this will fix the problem. I talked to goodfella on the phone and he also agrees it should fix most of my issues, if not all of them.

By the way I violently shook the rear hub in all directions, along with my diff, and none of them had any play. I think my bushings and pillowballs are all new. My chassis has 63k miles on it.

I found one for a good price. Hopefully the guy will get back to me so I can send a money order out. I was relieved when I found this was broken, and the rest of the suspension components were still in good condition. I would rather drop 100 on a PPF than 500 on pillowballs and mounts.

I cringed everytime I drove my car in slow traffic because it would clunk so bad. So if anyone is getting some clunking, and lots of shifter movement, take your PPF off completely, and inspect it before replacing all your pillowballs. Just sticking your head under there quick isn't sufficient.

I was about to replace my pillowballs before even checking it, then something told me to look it over.

That can be welded, no problem. It should be reinforced in the area of the weld with another piece fitted to lap the joint. Use TIG process for best results.

Just wrap some duct tape around it a few times and you'll be good to go.

Just kidding. I personally would use that as an excuse to grab the Mazdaspeed PPF.
