To all you R1/R2 guys

What is on the R1's and the R2's that you guys couldnt live with on the Touring. I know that the touring has cruise control, sunroof, and the bose system. The R1/R2 has the duel engine coolers, tuned suspension, the front lip, rear spoiler, and thats all i can think of so far. What all is involved in the "tuned system". Just wanting some opinions, ive already done a search but came unsuccessful on my findings.
Thanks guys

It's actually "dual oil coolers"...

The thing about the sunroofs is that it actually removes headroom. So models without sunroofs will offer more headroom for the driver + helmet.

However, I love my touring. Wouldn't trade it for an R1/2 any day. I like sunroofs.

Basically, if you are in the market for an FD, just think about how important the sunroof is to you. Don't get caught up in the R1/2, base, touring junk. Engine wise, they are all the same.

The thing that I think about is the sunroof. I would like to have it, but can live without.
I don't use cruise control, so I don't care about it.
Having 2 oil coolers is a plus.
I don't really care about the sound system. I want the car becuase of the performance and looks.
I'm probably an R1/R2 guy. Now only if I could find one...

The dual oil coolers are perhaps the only real difference. You can always remove most of the heavy extras on a touring. You'll be changing the shocks/spring out anyway?even on an R1. It's easy to as F/R spoilers if you want. The R1 "brake ducts" likely don't do squat anyway. i certainly enjoy the sunroof, and you'd have any easier time adding dual coolers (like CWRs) than you would putting a sunroof in a car that doesn't have one.

HaHa........ya Im in the same boat as you. i was thinking that the dual oil coolers would be a plus, but i also like the sunroof....but i was thinking, that by the time i can get an r1/r2 i would have to upgrade the suspension cause of normal wear and if thats the case, might as well get the touring with all the goodies. and you can always upgrade the oil cooler, maybe? Im kinda new, sorry for the dumb questions. Im interested in the rx-7s cause one of my good friends has it and i fell in love with it and other is i "actually" want a sports car. I had a 97 Neon ACR with an aftermarket Turbocharger on it that got stolen from me. Well, it was stolen, stripped, wrecked, then burned. The car ran a 13.1@110 with a 60ft of 2.152. got the car back, but cant do anything with it now

I didn't want the Bose system, I wanted as much trunk space as possible. I would have liked a sunroof, but decided I could live with out it. Otherwise I wanted the performance package.

I'm pretty much agreeing with everyone else.

The R1 suspension is really only different shocks (which are noticeably stiffer btw). By now many of the OEM shocks need to be replaced.

Dual oil coolers are nice. Same goes for the suade like fabric on the seats.

No sunroof leaves more room for the helmet but I do miss the sunroof ocassionaly.

Black interior is much nicer than tan IMHO, many 93 Tourings come with tan. 94 cars with tan interior aren't nearly as offensive, Mazda cut the amount of tan plastic back dramatically.

Basically everything from an R1 can be put on a Touring, you really can't add a sunroof to a R1 (cost effectively).

I've added cruise to my R1, it is a bolt-in.

A friend of mine has a 93 Touring with all the R1 stuff, spoilers, seats, oil coolers, strut brace.
When buying a FD find the best one you can, don't worry about the model so much.

Jeff

I love my R1, however, the sunroof would definitely be sweet to have. It gets a bit hot inside the car.

Lets see here ... no sunroof = better exterior lines. The bubble roof shows up so much more with a non-sunroof car. Also R1/R2 cars have no rear wiper so once again the looks are much cleaner.

I think the R1/R2 seats hold up better than the leather and also keep you planted better. I hate the BOSE system with a passion. I added cruise control to mine because I take so many long trips. I think the dual oil cooler is ok. I might remove mine in favor of a fresh air intake system-custom made.

I thought the seats were going to get left out.....they may well be my favorite thing about my R1 that most other bolt-up tourings don't have. Those things really grab onto you.

I've seen first hand that the dual oil coolers are effective. I had an instructor that had a touring model, and after putting in a oil temp gauge noticed that it would stay pegged on the track. He put in a second oil cooler and the oil temps started staying much closer to the water temp.

Other than that, I like the fat strut tower braces, lip, and the wing, but obviously those can easily be put on any car without much trouble.

i like having the sunroof but i hate looking at it with a passion, imho it ruins the roof line. the seats are cool, the oil coolers are important (i had a gauge on mine), the spoilers i could do without. i guess i like the fluid shape of the car without all the add ons, its so clean and graceful.

My biggest reason for getting an R2 is because I wanted the oil coolers and because I didn't want a sunroof. I like the suspension, but I'll end up changing that anyway. The other thing that is cool is the stcok strut bars.

Oh yeah, and I hated the Bose system. I used to install at Circuit City when I was fresh out of high school, that was when I realized that premium sound packages aren't all of what they are cracked up to be.

I heard that the sunroof make the car alot heavier. Not sure how true it is but, if you have to support the sunroof and glass is very heavy plus whatever else they have to add it sounds like it should be heavier. Sunroof are nice, but I dont like them on the 7 takes away from the styling. Thats why I didnt care about getting one. Plus I used to have a convertable and wanted to change.

Yeah I really didnt want the Bose system. I needed the dual oil coolers as I live in Texas. I wasnt praticularly(sp..) searching for an R2 but I was searching for a 94+FD. I really wanted the sunroof but it does look really nice with no rear wiper and no sunroof. I would defenetly go for the stock spoilers. Iam not a body kit guy but the spoilers look SO good on an FD. Think about if ever you needed to sell your car whats the resale. Rx7's arent to high but if its 94+ or R1/R2, it will bring in more.

i also like the sunroof and the thing is, if you buy a touring model, you can always convert your touring to an r1/2, its just a bitch and a half. i definatly go with r1, i dont care for the r2 door handles and the softer suspension, but then again, you can always change that.

FYI...

I weighed an entire STEEL sunroof assembly for a FC, total weight was 33lbs. I've had a sunroof assembly out of a FD and it is probably pretty similar.

The wieght included the sunroof panel itself, but the panel is much heavier than the steel covering the hole in a non-sunroof car due to it's double wall construction and mounts. There is additional bracing built into the roof of a sunroof car that would probably be equal to the wieght of the steel covering the hole +/- 1-2lbs.

All-in-all you could say the sunroof adds about 30-35lbs ot the car pretty safely. Not that much really but when you start counting every ounce it matters.

Jeff

My opinion: Get what I got! I have a base model; no rear wiper, no wing, no chin, no sunroof (need the helmet space), no Bose. I have cruise control. I added the dual oil coolers and a front strut bar along with adjustable Konis. Only thing missing is the seats, but I am one (of the few it seems) who prefers the tan interior.

I absoloutly love the seats on my r1. They hold you like normal cloth seats, but feel and look much nicer then normal cloth seats.
