Air Thermosensor

My check engine light started going on after hitting small bumps in the road and now it stays on most of the time. Fine. Got a short somewhere.

I did a search and got this far:

I crossed the "Ten" and "Gnd" on the Diagnostic box and got an LS and a LSSSSSS, which corresponds to "Intake air thermosensor open or short" and "EGR switch open or short circuit."

Ok...I'll go look at the EGR sensor tomorrow, but where the hell is the air thermosensor? And could this be a bad ground someplace else?

Is it fairly common for the air thermosensor to go out? I haven't heard anyone complaining. Also, before I go out and look later, can I get to it by just removing the vacuum tank or does the UIM have to come off?

Anyone know how much one of these costs?

Thanks

lot's of good/recent info in this thread here:

If I was on TV or radio when I was changing mine, you would've had to bleep out almost everything I said, but it wasn't really all that bad...

Damn..that must be the code that I took my car in for, and they said it was a heat sensor or something.

If I run my Heater on for too long..it'll pop on...and sometimes the check engine light goes on and off while driving for a bit..

I've had it checked..they said it was just a sensor that needed replacing, but nothing life-threatening.

(Mazdas & More)

Looks like a piece of cake to fix...I'll replace it when the rebuild is done.

I went and read that thread and I got all pissed off again about this engineering. WTF is it with putting that thing where I can't get to it without torching a wrench.

Anyway, I was kind of intrigued because the thread talked about ground straps and 3K hesitation...so after I checked the sensor wires and they were ok, I used a flat head screwdriver to pull the EGR valve back and forth to make sure it wasn't physically stuck. Then I used sandpaper to rough up the passenger side ground strap at the back of the UIM and also the negative on the battery terminal cable.

After pressing the brake to reset I checked it all out....

Problem gone.

I'm happy, but doesn't that just frost your apricots? That is it!!!! I'm gonna go get some of that heavy ground strap those freaky million watt stereo installers use.
