air/smog pump and vacuum leak and rich running?

air/smog pump and vacuum leak and rich running?
I normally see air pumps dump up stream to the O2 and down stream to the Cat along with venting. I have seen some references to the pump and vacuum leaks or causing a system to run rich if its not connected as well as your cat will melt if its not connected. Someone have the facts concerning the pump.
