Air Pump...

Hi Guys,

Little bit of a problem here. I've just tried to pass the UK MOT and have failed on the emissions, here we have to get below 3.5% CO2 and less than 1200 ppm HC for a '94 car, failed on both counts...

After talking to a few people and reading a lot (including the service manuals) I realised that I think my air pump is not running and therefore probably not getting clean air down the exhaust to help with the emissions. I have the original ECU too so can't mess with any fuel maps to get me through the test.

Have attached a pic of the - disconnected - connector on top of the air pump, there doesn't seem to be an obvious place for this to plug into so I guess something was removed with the original intakes??

Nah, the wire should be tucked away somewhere under the crossover pipe.

Got it...well found it at least with some cunning wire coat hanger work.

It's dark now so will take the crossover pipe off in the morning to get at it properly, cheers.

Is the car an import or UK FD?
I have been told that due to the engine being rotary a pre 95 FD does not even need an emissions test. This came from a top UK Rotary specialist.
Don't think I got my wires crossed either so im 99% sure im right in what im saying.
Contact Pip http://www.wgtautodevelopments.co.uk/ and ask him the question.

Car is a '94 import from Japan. Everywhere I've been has said it needs to go through the non-cat test for pre-95 cars. Which is what I've had. < 3.5% CO2 and < 1200ppm HC.

As it happens I've now got the air pump working, driving is notably smoother at lower revs, but the idle is now higher than it should be, I guess that is due to increased airflow, is it worth keeping the pump and adjusting the idle to the normal levels?

As it happens I've been emailing Pip and he suggested the air pump thing. Just need to get the idle down now and it should be ok...in theory.

Just a bit of an update really...

Connected the air pump as mentioned in my previous post, and have now adjusted the idle down to between 700-750rpm without any electrical load (as suggested in the service manual) and the car seems to be running fine.

There is a noticeable increase in the amount of "popping" from the exhaust system however, would this be normal? When I say increased I mean I get pops repeatedly on gear changes, when cold I also get a series of them (aking to machine gun fire), any thoughts?
