air intake system

ok im movin up north a lil for work. and well i have to drive my fd up there or i can pay the 900 some bux to have it shipped.. anyways my car runs and all but i dont have an intake system on it.. thats the reason i dont drive it.. do you think id be alright driving just to atlanta from stuart florida without an intake filter system?? i bought one but its backordered, so once i get there the car will sit till it comes in.. but i dont want to do something dumb and kill my motor cause of this..

what you all think?? should i do it and save the money rather than shipping it?

im planning on leavin the first of december, and driving straight there.. once there it will sit until the intake comes in. i just dont want to spend 900 bones on shipping it if i dont have too..

if all else i could prob wrap some gauze or something to the intake openings and tape it up so it doesnt get sucked in, and it will filter big things out... its a temp fix but it might work for what im doing.. what you guys think??

I wouldnt use tape, especially if you are going to be boosting at all. At least use tie wraps.

If you have the time, just order a temporary setup and use it to drive the car. I can even send you my stock pipes and apexi filters tomorrow if you are interested in buying them.

You can pick up an old stock box for not much more than shipping. Paper Filter another $5.

I can lend you an HKS set up with K&N filters so you can drive it .If you still have the rubber tubes from the turbos to the stock air box ,you can but the HKS pipes in with the K&N filters and be safe from dirt sucked into the motor . When you are finished with the setup ,clean it and send it back or I will sell it to you .

wow, thanks everyone for the help.. i may take you guys up on the offer.. but id much rather wait for my stuff to come in. since its backordered.. i just need to drive it roughly 5-6 hours and there she will stay parked till i get everything finished correctly.. this kinda sucks for me big time!! id buy a stock airbox but its going to be useless to me once my real intake comes in..

i dont have the rubber lines for the turbos, thats why i bought the whole kit from hks..

yeah id be careful with that... contaminates and particulate matter can wreck an engine. i really wouldnt drive it without an intake. but thats just me.

Sounds like a good idea but really a bad idea. Way to easy for part or all of some pantyhose to get sucked into the intake. Not worth it.

it was a very dry attempt at humour. But im sure you could make something using an a cheap pod filter and some pipe.

were u told how much longer will the backorder take?

i definitly will not drive for 5-6 hrs w/out an air filter. especially when the car is turbo charged. you'll get more debris and dirt in your engine than a NA car. ofcourse towing the car would be a waste of $ too when the car is driveable. Maybe you can borrow someone's intake from the florida forum?

ebay also sells cheap aluminum intake pipes. for like $25, + 2 smallest cylinderical K&N for $35 each that you can find in most auto parts or aftermarket parts shop. so roughly about $95 and you can get/receive them within this week. then sell those or save it for emergency after u get ur HKS. just a thought....

pantihose would work... but... 5-6 hrs.... idk man... might get sucked into ur turbo...

yeah see my point, the back order was told to be here about a week after i need the car moved. perhaps it will be a lil quicker but i have my doubts. ill try and see if i cant borrow an intake and then ship it back when i get my car to atlanta.. heck even a stock intake system would work

if a big bug gets sucked up in there, you could say goodbye to one of your turbos. i would not recommend driving it with no filters...

yeah, i think im going to see if i can source a stock intake system for cheap or borrow one from someone so i can drive it there.. then ill take it off put it in my closet or send it back as soon as my intake system gets in.. it will be best i think.. even if i had to buy a stocker and drive it, id still save 600+ dollars from having to ship my car!

expanding on the pantyhose idea, why dont you cover the intake in tight-weave metal gauze mesh, then layer pantyhose over that, and then layer larger weave mesh over that. it would make a very crude panel filter.

Definitely don't drive it without a filter, the things I've found in my PFS airbox after only just one month of driving are shocking. Namely: chocolate bar wrappers, cigarette buts, cigar buts, rocks, all sorts of large bugs, and a pop sickle stick. None of those things would be good for your turbos.

and a popsicke stick wow!! good enough reason there... ill def be running some sort of filter hmm i think ill just get some rubber flexable radiator hose and attach it to a cone filter, crude but works.. and its cheap!
