Question Air dam/deflector for engine compartment

My 1993 R1 came with a hokey cardboard cutout which laid flat in the front of the engine compartment (between the headlights width wise and from the front of the hood back approximately 10 inches--narrowing from the car centerline out to the headlights). The pevious onwer claimed this acted to preferentially route cooling air in the engine compartment. I was wondering if any one here had heard of the use of a defector/dam in this area. I also wanted to know as I am considering making a deflector from sheet plastic (0.125 in thick) to replace the cardboard one and could save the effort if little or no value is gained (or worse, impeded cooling).

Sounds like he replaced/lost that flat black plastic piece that routes air from the nose of the car over to air box. Got any pics?
