Aftermarket Sunroof? Worth it?
Aftermarket Sunroof? Worth it?
Has anybody installed an aftermarket or even a stock sunroof to any fd that didnt have on before? I'm just obsessed with the spoiler sunroof look on the fds but i dont know if its worth cutting the roof
.. Plus i have a tan interior which just makes everything much much harder!
Post picture of the work too.
Thanks guys.

I would think it would be very hard and expensive the convert a non-sunroof FD to have a sunroof, Unlike the FC, the FD has a bubble top roof thats shaped in a way that you can't just stick any panel in there. Only thing i could think of is to use the parts from a sun-roofed FD donor car. Even then the roof structure is more then likely different for each one. I would leave the car uncut and trade to someone who has a sunroof or deal. This is coming from someone who owns an FD, and an FC with a custom targa roof. The roof structure is no joke, leave it be.
Don't do it.
If you really want a sunroof, then buy an FD with one. There are a lot of decent touring FD's on the market right now. Adding it would be not only difficult and expensive, but probably would not turn out well at all. Find a 94 touring and get the moonroof. They are very nice.
Keep in mind however, that the sunroof decreases headroom by at least an inch. I have a '94 touring, and while I like the moonroof, I don't like the reduced headroom. I'd love to find a decent base model or R1 instead.

You could do it, but I wouldn't recommend it. The FD's with sunroof's have about an extra inch of structuring to help add rigidity/safety back into the car. This is why you gain about an inch of headroom in a non-sunroof equipped FD. However, taking a non-sunroof equipped FD and adding one in, you won't have that extra inch of the structuring. IMO, if you really want a sunroof, just sell your car and buy one that has a stock sunroof.
wow that blows guys .. but thanks for the info nways .. it would suck
to have to sell it now .. especially here arround Massachusetts there is just not many good fds for sale. ..

so not even an original fd sunroof ? im just curious if anybody's ever done and what they have to say.. i mean you guys already convinced me not to do it but i just wanna know if anybody did it
Thanks again
Thanks again
again the only problem with it is the buble top like staticguitar said. I think.
Noo! not cut the roof off.. just install a sunroof or a moonroof or whatever you call it to my roof.. Im not gonna mess with the structure of the roof .. they would just cut a hole in the roof and install it. no?

Like the others mentioned, i would just find a touring model.
I don't know about everybody else, but I would almost cry knowing my roof was going to be chopped up! Just not a good idea.
You have tan interior and no sunroof... I assume you have a base model?

I've not seen the inside of an FD roof with the headliner off, but I do know that the entire sunroof mechanism comes out in one piece because it's sitting in what amounts to a sub-frame.
I can't imagine that Mazda made two different unibodies. The attachment points for the sunroof frame are probably there, and all they did was cut holes in the tourers, roll the edges, and bolt in the subrame/mechanism.

yeah its a 93 base model.

thats what im thinking about doing. And then this guy offered me his sunroof setup. everything included so what i thought about doing was just bring it to a professional installer and have him cut the hole and install the setup.
I dont see why the entire roof has to be cut off...
