Aftermarket Steering Wheel Question

Guys,

Getting an aftermarket steering wheel and have a noob question.

Confused while looking at some others setups as to what parts need to be purchased to complete...do I simply need a quick release like the one below and be good to go? I wasn't sure if a hub needed to be purchased separately.

You will still need a hub to make this quick release work.

If you want a quick release you will need the Hub, then Quick Release, then Wheel.

I just have a hub with the wheel on it. I wouldn't mind getting the quick release but then you have to buy the hub lock or its pointless!

A hub goes over the spindle so you wont replace your turn signal. You also don't keep your aigbag because there isn't an aftermarket steering wheel with it. I have a Works Bell hub but I've never messed with anything other than that for my other cars.

Pretty much Works Bell if you have the money. NRG if you want to go Chinese and save a couple bucks.

One thing to consider is your wheel placement preference. If you're short, you will be sitting closer to the peddles so your stumplord legs can reach. Even with the "short" hub and quick release the steering wheel will end up extended some amount towards the driver. Depending on the wheel design this may end up feeling like you're piloting a really high tech school buss.

If your tall, you may prefer the wheel being extended closer to you because your god damn spider legs make you sit with the seat maxed out to the rear.

Also when the wheel is extended you need long skelator fingers to reach the blinker arm.

I wanted to retain the wheel distance as close to stock as possible so I went with a Works Bell short hub and QRS II ultra slim quick release. I think this is the shortest combo. It pretty much kept the wheel where it was stock and I was very pleased. The QRS isn't as flashy or as easy to operate as the standard Rapfix quick release, but wheel placement was more important to me.

You can always run a normal hub without a quick release and usually that's pretty close to stock.

I also run the QRS since the regular works bell long hub itself was too short for me but the standard hub was too long and I have stubby fingers.

I wouldn't get the nrg one as youd either have to hack it up or take off the clock spring since theres no opening for the wiring to go through.

if you want a short hub just get the works bell like others suggested

Arrow

Save yourself the future headaches and get either a Works Bell or Daikei hub:

Daikei steering wheel hub adaptors - MiataRoadster - High-performance customer service...and parts for Roadsters

Works Bell steering wheel hub adaptors - MiataRoadster - High-performance customer service...and parts for Roadsters

Thanks for the help guys! Just to reiterate, if I get just the hub w/o a quick release...I should get the tall oppose to the short hub to retain stock placement?

depends on which steering wheel you go with. The ones with less concave will work with the tall hub

If you get something like a 350mm nardi deep corn or grip royal then youd need a short hub.

No one can answer that directly as it depends on a lot things:

* Seat type/position
* Steering wheel type
* Driver size/position

It's not an exact science so be prepared to possibly experiment with a few options (unless you have someone local to you who already had a similar setup so you can find out directly what will or will not work).

It's true. On stock seat, my personal wheel with works bell short and works bell regular quick release hub was too close to my chest. With aftermarket seat, that setup would be ideal.

I can say based on blinker arm distance that the WB short hub with QRS release is pretty darn close to stock wheel placement with a flat wheel. I have a pic ill look for.

You're right. With the regular works bell qr, it felt like the high beam was on.
