Aftermarket Ignition Coil
Anyone install an aftermarket leading coil with their upgraded ignition? I have a Jacobs Energy Pak that I'm concerned about installing on my stock coils. Anyone have the Ultra coil or other, and know a good source to buy one from? Thanks.

I wouldnt mess with the Jacobs on the stock coils. I'm not sure what a good coil is for that amp. Personally, I'd sell it then buy a MSD6a and run a TII coil for the leading. Its better than the 3rd gen coil

After my Jacobs destroyed two stock lead coils, I wired in two CraneCams LX91 coils bolted to a bracket that's welded to the case of the BMK which itself is at the stock location. Puts out tremendous spark and works great. Check out my gallery; I have several pics of the setup. Jeg's and Summit Racing have all the stuff ya need at prices much more reasonable than "rotary engine performance" places.

When those two stock coils got smoked, I was momentarily pissed with the Jacob's as well. Then, it all made sense as my learning curve caught up w/ the reality. Jacob's is strong stuff. Ya gots'ta have equally strong coils.
RX7.com's "Captain America" race car has three of those little blue bastards doing the spark work; from what I saw, one for the lead plugs and one for ea. trailing plug. With standing 4+ y.o. drag racing records, that car was phenomenal then and still is now. I want some of what that car's got.
Most negativity regarding regarding proven equipment such as Jacob's is generated by a money-challenged sub-group of the RX7 crowd whose cars look and run like **** piles (cars that are beyond resuscitation). These boys post the most and spread their disease across the forums. They cannot think for themselves.

There are people that have made over 600rwhp with a single MSD6a on a stock TII coil. Thats all you need and it only cost $120 for the MSD and whatever for a leading T2 coil from a junk yard. Its a cheap, reliable, stabe ignition setup

Yea, there is no point putting amps on your trailing unless your running 0 split OR super high boost (upper 20's or close to 30psi). The reason is the leading sparks first and combusts the majority of the mixture leaving the trailing for cleanup.
You were right, some people dont think for themselves, they just buy whats on a race car they were looking at.....yea, I kinda took offence to that comment, you definatly wouldnt be making comments like that if you'd ever seen my car. Its an extremely clean 1995 with low miles making over 400rwhp on twins and running 125mph in the 1/4 all on 93octane. In addition every piece of alum on the engine is polished to the point your woman could apply lipstick with it. Sometimes you need to realize what you've seen in person doesnt always hold true to the 10's of thousands of members on the forum.

My point is Jacob's is a great product. I got boinked by it and then resolved the boinking. You were right on about what Jacob's does to stock coils. Devlman oughtta keep the Jacob's and get better-than-stock coils. Probably less hassle and expense for him and he'll have a killer setup since he's most of the way there already. Bought mine before I saw Ari's car and have never, ever felt the need to run three amps. MSD6A is another great product.
I'm certain your's is a great car. I'm not trying to offend anyone on this thread. I took an unapologetic shot at the riff-raff of the forum in general because there's at least ten thousand of 'em (well, they post like there's ten thousand of them due to the volume of crap). That's not you, is it?
Steve's CYM is surprisingly pretty much all stock BTW. I'd like a peek at the red car.

I thought it was directed at me since you said....
"Most negativity regarding regarding proven equipment such as Jacob's is generated by a money-challenged sub-group of the RX7 crowd whose cars look and run like **** piles (cars that are beyond resuscitation). and I was the only one on this thread that had something "negative' to say about the Jacobs box.
Also, just for a side bit of info, Steves CYM is no longer stock.....its VERY far from it but I dont know if I'm at liberty to say what he's doing to it. Let me just say this.....it'll prob be making more power than his red car lol

Aw man, you described exactly what had happened to me. I bought a FC coil, but all that stuff is old and I went with brand-new, bullet-proof stuff. I didn't want anymore issues. I already know you have a good ride and I wasn't disagreeing with anything you said; your advice is sound.
When Steve was here tuning us in January, the CYM was still stock. I couldn't see that lasting much longer
You going to RR? I'm hooking up w/ the Birmingham bunch on Friday morning for the caravan on up. Philip Sohn invited me to stay Thursday evening with him as I'm coming in New Orleans.

Mark 57 I don't think alot of people appreciate your comment about rx-7 hours that don't have buckets of cash to dump on there cars. THere are plenty of people on a budget with cars that run well(probably pretty close to stock since they don't have **** loads of cash) and look good but just don't have money to waste on a body kit and don't have anything to prove to people around them. Not everyone needs the "hey I've spent 6 g's just on my body so drool over it car." Thats close to rice. Just be consider it of the non-affluent owners because there are a whole lot of us.

i talked to a Jacobs tech guy who said that the pre-spring 03 Jacobs ignition module had a particular problem relating to doing something on the negative side of the positive charge that did eat coils on the rotary.
they fixed the problem w the new (spring 03) Jacobs Rotary Pro Pack. that's what i run w the stock coil. Ari says it is bulletproof and they make 700 hp with one of them on the leading plugs. that's good enough for me.
there are many ways to get it done electrically and i like Stephen's MSD setup w the MSD 6a and the T2 coil on the leading plugs. cheap and effective.
IMO, if you are making less that 400 rwhp you do not need any ignition upgrades... if you want to upgrade that's your business but the stock, crank fired ignition works quite well.
