Aftermarket ECU vs. Reprogrammed Stock ECU (Computer Chip)

I have heard different things about reprogrammed ECU and how they are insufficient. I was planning a rebuild from Pettit, and to go along with it some mods. (cb, dp, pulleys, all reliability mods) Should i invest in a Power FC, or should i go with Pettit's reprogrammed. Why would one be better than the other? I am not planning to go any further with mods any time soon. Dru

Unless you plan on either going Single Turbo or running larger injectors, I wouldn't bother with the reprogrammable ECU's like the Haltech and Power FC.

They are great if you are constantly modifying your car, you know how to tune it, and you have a dyno around to check your results. However, if you don't know what you are doing, and you try messing with them, you can seriously damage your car. If you are letting someone else tune it, you engine's life is in their hands...

If you are just doing the basic performance mods, I would recommend going with a Pettit, M2 or GForce type upgraded ECU. Just plug and play, no rewiring or anything.

Mahjik offers some very good advice. However as an owner of a Pettit chip I must say that if, when I was in the market for an ecu the PFC was around, I would have bought that instead. I'm not saying I could tune it or would even have a need to but it does provide feedback like water temp. It's also easier to have tuned if need be. Not only that but it eliminates several problems like the 3K hesitation and has different boost settings where as the Pettit chip relies on the wastegate settings or dedicated boost control. I really love my Pettit chip and it has never missed a beat but the advantages of the PFC can't be ignored. Oh well, at least I didn't buy a PFS PMS
