Aftermarket Alarm Install

do you have to disconnect the factory alarm in order to install an aftermarket system?

When I had my alarm/turbo timer/central locking installed last year, they did not disable the factory alarm. I had some issues where occasionally I would come back to the car, unlock and disable the alarm with my remote control, but when I opened the door the factory alarm would go off (horn beeping and headlights popping up and down flashing). From memory, it seemed to happen whenever I armed the alarm with the turbo timer running.

I just took it back to the place and asked them to disable the factory alarm. No problems since.
