MD Advice needed

Hello Everyone,

I have had my 93 R1 for 3 months (havent really drove much as im waiting to get historic tags this month here in Maryland). So im preparing for spring and wanted to get some experienced eyes on my 'plan'.

The car has 102k with 17k on a rebuilt motor. Problem is, the motor was rebuilt way back in 2002 the build included all silicon hoses/new belts and a new OMP. The car has barely been driven since 02, with the previous owner only starting it and driving 20 minutes or so once a week. What are the odds stuff has gone bad under the hood since the rebuild was done so long ago even though mileage is low? For now I intend on changing the oil/filter, fuel filter, plugs/wires and flush the radiator is there anything else I need to do considering the age of the rebuild?

Once the general maintenece is done, im buying a boost and water temp gauge (any recommendations?) also will get a downpipe, a bigger radiator, 185 degree fan switch and 180 degree thermostat. With just a downpipe and radiator will I need to get a stand alone ECU?? If I also get a catback and intake will the stock ECU work or will there be boost creep? Do I need to get a boost controller or knock sensor? My goal is longevity/reliability, was also thinking of adding some kind of water injection kit. Please let me know if this seems like the right track, any advice appreciated.

Welcome.

1. Do a compression test. If you think the engine is worn or may need attention, then you need to see how healthy it is... Rotary Resurrection home of the budget rebuild.

2. Read the FAQ sticky in this section. It will answer many of your basic questions about reliability mods, and what the stock ECU can handle.

3. I highly recommend an Apexi Power FC. Your goals for gauges are wise, but the PFC Commander handheld can display the metrics already recorded from the ECU alleviating the need for many basic gauges. It will also protect things with your concerns of modifications as you begin to open things up with a downpipe, catback, and intake pipes. Read through the below link thoroughly. If you choose to install a few gauges, "Defi" are quality. Steer clear of cheaper gauges.

4. Water injection is a great idea! Spend some time in the Auxiliary Injection section to get familiar with what you should go with. AI will greatly reduce internal combustion heat, carbon build-up and protect you against possible bad gas.

5. Research, research, research. Knowledge is your best tool, and this forum is loaded with it. Get familiar with the Search function and learn as much as you can.

For the compression test I bought a piston engine tester,and found the youtube howto on using it in a rotary. It seemed pretty straight forward until I realized I have to remove a lot of stuff to get to the plugs (im a novice). I think I will stick to just a downpipe and radiator and get the PFC once I start opening things up some more (after maintenence and the compression check). Great link btw to the PFC pdf, it answered a lot of my questions. Thanks again for the help!

No problem.

Engine health is definitely number one. The rest of your plans, and mods mean little if your engine is tired, or on its way out. Definitely figure out the situation before moving too far forward. It's good you accept that you are a novice, but you can not accept that you will remain a novice.

FD's require money and knowledge. If you have little of one, you better have a lot of the other.
