VA Adjusting Tokico shocks

There is one thread on this from 2005 but it doesn't quite answer my question. I've been doing some extensive research on suspensions and haven't come across an answer yet either. I'm about to replace the shocks and springs anyways but am very curious to know the answer to this.

My 2nd hand car came with Tokikos, but only in the fronts. The 1-5 adjuster cap is missing. I know I can easily pick one up but I don't think that would "fix" anything. I can actually adjust the pin and it clicks as it moves clockwise and c-c-wise....but it spins in either direction infinitely. If I just buy a cap and slap it on there, it doesn't really tell me anything because the pin is not relative to the cap anymore. Who knows where it's at now?! Normally, I would think if it was at 1 on the cap that it wouldn't turn c-c-wise anymore and if it was at 5 it wouldn't turn clockwise anymore. But that's not the case.

From what I've read, it seems normal for it to spin continuously, and with the cap on, you'd know not to spin it more to the left or right. But what if you do? And how do you get it back within the 1 - 5 range?

Anyone with thoughts? Thanks everyone. Sorry for the long post for such a simple question.

I have the tokico shocks and I honestly have no idea. One of the caps on mine is loose and I just always make sure to only adjust the pin within the 1-5 range. I would call a Tokico reps and see if they can get you any information on that...

The head is not shaped the same all around:

The outside 'cap' mirrors that so no matter how many turns you have, there is only one position for each number.

Approaching 23K posts....Mahjik knows his S. I think I saw that pic from that 2005 thread too. I did, and reading that post again, it's so simple! I have so much to learn........

So you're saying it IS relative Mahjik? It just repeats itself....just didn't seem mechanically natural for something to keep turning one direction but repeating settings. Your explanation and dhays pictures clearly explains it. I just won't think of the mechanics.

I now can just point it towards the flat spot for #5 and go from there.

Thank you very much.
