AC Question

My AC has never worked since I bought my FD. The other day I was dicking around and noticed that when I turn the AC on, the compressor does not click on. Fuses are good, so that leaves the Relay.

Anyone ever had a problem like this with a simple relay being the answer? I'm gonna feel like a dipshit if I replace a relay and my **** blows ice cold.........

My 93 did the same thing. I took it to a shop and had them check the system and it turns out the refrigerant had leaked until empty, and that there's a safety system in the compressor that won't allow it to come on if empty. Maybe check and make sure you have refrigerant?

Sadly, it is rarely as simple as a 'relay'. As chocolate describes, usually the system has a leak that kicks the low pressure disable switch on.

i changed out my pulley compressor for an electric one, although you'll need at least a 160A alternator

If your car has R134a you can buy a $5 hose and gauge at your local auto store and see if the system is pressurized.

check your connector on the compressor I forgot to connect mine when I was putting my engine back together. Also you can check your relay easily just pull it out of the car and take the plastic cover off of it and reinstall it and see if it moves when you hit the switch.

and you can always momentarily just put 12 volts to the compressor clutch and see if you get cold air....

i know this is off the subject but my ac compressor stopped working on my Dakota pick up truck when i tried to recharge the system with a pep boys kit and i ended up draining the system. can i test the compressor with 12v as well or is this only good for FDs

As stated above, your refrigerant charge is probably gone.

Putting 12v to the compressor for a second or two is not a horrible idea, but not really a good one either since you can damage the compressor running it without refrigerant. A better idea would be to probe around with a voltmeter and see where you're losing 12v at, and/or to put a set of gauges on it and see what the system pressures are.

tt7hvn, could you please provide some more information on your conversion? Sounds interesting.

Spin the pully on the compressor itself to make sure it hasnt seized up. Resulting in you needing to buy a whole new compressor. This would be a common reason why when you bought the car, the AC didn't work.
