99 spec y-pipe install
OK, so my plastic crossover pipe cracked at the mount and I picked up apolished replacement 99 spec one. Did the install the other day. Bit of a pain but came out OK. Some issues/tips for the install:
1. have some replacment vac hose ready (the small diameter ones), you will need to remove some of the old ones and they most likely will not come off without ruining them.
2. I removed the air intake hoses, air pump and then went underneath to remove the rear turbo air intake pipe.
3. Removed the old y pipe and crossover.
4. When disconnecting the air pump electrical connector is cracked in 100 pieces, old and brittle. A (hopefully) exact replacement is on order. When it broke the air pump fuse blew when the 12v wire hit ground. Car ran like crap til I figured that out.
5. Put the new Y pipe in and trashed the o ring, so i reused the old one, you may want to have a spare handy.
6. I ended up replacing most of the stupid oem hose clamps with regular worm drive type.
7. I also trashed the air pump output hose, most everything under the hood is hard as hell and as soon as you touch it it cracks or splits. Ended up sticking the old one back in until a new one comes shows up.
Anyway it came out great in the long run, but as usual with this car a hour job turned into three..

Another good thing that's worth replacing is the gaskets between the turbo outlets and both ends of the Y-pipe. The original gaskets were paper, Mazda later changed them to metal. If you have the original paper gaskets, make sure you get all the old gasket off so you have a good flat surface for the metal gasket to seal to.
It's really not a bad job, but it's always worth replacing old stuff when you get in there.

Hard to say, it's quite possible they were changed out during some previous service. I haven't really found a rhyme or reason behind when cars get the metal gaskets.

OK replaced the airpump hose. The car (in my mind) does seem a bit peppier. I think is sounds a bit better too. I also ened up replacing the check valve in the one hose above the alternator. I checked the old one and it did close but blowing the open way it barely let air through. The other three will need to go soon...
