Helping a new FD guy via PM and I ran into this question.
I know that the 96+ cars in Japan had the coil packs re-arranged with a new bracket that made the rear most coil "angled" instead of all of the coils being straight on.
So, anyone with one of the later cars or some of the later parts sitting around that are known to be set up properly would be nice if you chimed in
Basically it LOOKS like 93-95 are as such:
Front of engine: Trailing 1, Leading, Trailing 2 in back
96+ are:
Front of engine: Trailing 1, Trailing 2, Leading in back
Also it looks like the coil pack harness always has 3 colored connectors - white, black, and blue.
White - Trailing 1
Black - Leading
Blue - Trailing 2
The coil pack harness is re-arranged for the 96 cars.
So...is this correct? See pics of my coil pack (which I know is 100% good) and a pic of a 96 coil pack I found online that may or may not be right.
Supposed 96 coil pack. Note how the rear Leading coil is angled, that is the sure sign of the later bracket.
My '94 coil pack. Note all coils are "straight on" with leading in the middle:
Rather than remove the large TB intake pipe, mechanics will reach under it and hook up the plug leads by feel. Not aware of the change of positiion change for Ver.4 plus cars, they will hook of the leads wrong.
Thanks everyone! I think we have this correctly documented for posterity.
BTW I think the later coil pack bracket is to put the hardest working pack (leading) out by itself and pushed out for more airflow around it. I'm guessing you would probably need special plug wires to for it to fit/reach properly.

i'm not sure we've figured out definitively why they moved things around, but it also makes more room for the Magic Box (N3F1-20-4B0).
the spark plug wires are different
