Also ask the seller if he has ever overheated the car before.
I got a black 95 R2 last summer. I say snag that silver gem up. Very rare.

This makes me think I got a good deal on my 94SSR2, $15K with 40K miles two years ago. It has been repaired from a wreck though, but it still makes me feel that extra bit special...

I agree that the R2 is rare but to pay a premium for it seems strange to me. Like I said the only people who will care that you are driving a silver R2 around are a handful on this forum. I would much rather get an FD in better shape that wasnt as rare. It would save me some headache in the future. I guess silvr94R2 is right, I dont have a lot of money and I would be more than happy with a black 93 with a new engine over a silver 94 with high miles and problems. I dont have the extra money to through around and it seems petty to spend several thousand more so that 20 people can give me props on owning a more rare version of the FD. Most of the people that see an FD dont know what it is much less recognized the difference and rarity of the different models. But alas this is my opinion.

On the street nobody will give more props to the 94R2 over the base 93 given equal condition.

Scott and everyone...thanks for your support...after telling the dealer I would pay him an extra 200 (what is an extra 200 when you are talking thousands!) He said he would get back to me today and he did and says the car is mine for 17k...I have my ticket to Baltimore, MD on Friday morning...should be at the dealer to pick it up by 5pm...I know the car is in really good shape besides the turbos...My cousin was there while I gave her this 50 page long list of things to check...paint is immaculate and interior is immaculate...everything works except the turbos...So I am off friday morning on the quest for the 7...then a long *** drive back to Tulsa, Ok...20 hours someone said...I was going to get the turbos fixed when I got back to Tulsa...do you think it's a problem driving it that far without it working properly?

Thanks again guys...

David

P.S. Will post pics as soon as I get back on sunday...if I can keep my eyes open that is

Oh...I also had Pettit overnight an AST to the dealer so I could install it before the drive back...don't think there would be any 3G ASTs available on a sunday in FrogJump, wherever...

What do you think about the tranny and engine oil...what do you think I should go for?

Didn't you say this last week? You have been bitten by the FD bug, that's for sure. Sending mods to the dealer before you even take delivery... that is classic! So congratulations on the purchase, like I said before I think that looks like a nice example of a well cared for car. THAT is what you should pay a premium for, not the R2 or touring or PEP package, although it is nice.

One word of caution - I wouldn't go changing out the AST before you drive home. Ever heard of Raceaflais? (see www.nsxfiles.com) trying to do something last minute before a race (or in your case a long drive) just opens the door to screwing something up. Sure, any moron can change the AST (even I've done it) but if the car is running well, notwithstanding the boost issue, just top off the fluids and take it home. Make sure you have a properly inflated spare and your cellphone is charged up. Just bring the new aluminum AST along for the ride, the chances are slim the old plastic one will pick this particular moment to rupture.

So I guess you blew off the trip to Jamaica - or more likely you spent the money on something silver Just got back on the first from a week in Ocho Rios/Jamaica myself.... you missed a nice trip, but picking up a new car is certainly more fun.

Scott, I was thinking about that...think I will take your advice and let the AST ride in the back as a just in case part...Yeah the FD bug took a big chunk out of my *** and now that I have one I it's starting to heal...Funny, when I called pettit and ordered the AST they were ready to sell me the $1200 package when they herd it was my first and it was stock...I told them "let me take care of my boost issue first...

Actually I get somthing Silver and I get to go to Jamaica too! I am from Jamaica but living and working in Tulsa, Ok...long story...My mom owns a dive shop down there and she is opening a second location so I am going to help her with that for a week...Should be fun...but I will be thinking of the FD sitting in the garage....

Thanks again...

David

Buy it if you can afford to spend $5,000 more on it if/when the engine goes out within the next 2 years, possibly as soon as 1 month from now.

Never buy an RX-7 unless you can afford $5,000 over the price you pay for the car.

Well, I don't think I will be able to afford a new engine like this month...but considering this is just a toy for me (have another car and a motorcycle) I think it will be ok...by mid summer I should be able to spend another chunk on it

if turbos and what not are bad, get into the car and do the work yourself. itll save you a lot of money and youll actually get to learn about the car.

i replaced my turbos and did the silicone lines myself, etc just as many other owners have....its not that hard, more tedious than anything.

if you need help or info... myself along with the rest of the forum im sure would be happy to help out

Nic...This forum is like a God send...a real wealth of information that I hope the owner if the site is backing it up well...everytime I find a jewel in the ruff I save it to my harddisk...

I think I will do the work myself...Since it's not a daily drive I can afford to have it off the road as long as I need to...I plan on doing as much work on it as I possibly can...First order of business is trying to fix the turbos, then onto the hose job...everyone says exactly what you said...tedious but not hard...

Leaving at 6:45am tomorrow and should have the car by 5:30 tomorrow evening...then saturday I do the cross country thing.

Will post pics of the car as soon as I get back...

Thanks everyone for you help and support...really helps having hundreds of FD owners out there to chat with...

Silvr94r2: Man, I just got in about an hour ago...that was a 19 hour drive...I am lucky I sprung for an air ticket for my cousin to come with me and split the driving...I did 17 hours and he did 2

The car handles like a dream! I have never driven one before but still was confident enough to fly 1200 miles to pick it up...The only thing left now it to take care of the turbo issue...I feel it kick in at about 3500rmp and then is hauls *** after that...am I supposed to feel two turbos kick in? NeWay, next order of business is to get all the fluids changed and then install a boost gauge...

The car is in IMMACULATE condition...paint is flawless (except for a couple of rock dings on the front) and the interior is a 10! (even came with a sony 10 disk changer)....I have never seen sued seats before but they were pretty cumfy...Already got it detailed and all the dirt is off...Nice and shiny again...it wont see rain another day...

As soon as I catch up on some rest I will post some pics here...

Thanks again

David

Congrats.

No, you are feeling it correctly.

If you don't have a lot of experiance with turbo cars its probably just a case of you not being able ot dissern the nuances yet.

Definately get a boost gauge though.

Tip from the personal experiance archives:
PUT IN A NEW THERMOSTAT

Most people can't tell that its a twin turbo car, you just feel a surge and that is the main thing. The whole point of sequential twins is to try and have a smooth even buildup of power starting at low RPMs. After a while of driving the car you will notice when the second turbo comes on line.

Of course it is possible that you do have a boost problem, but a gauge will tell you that, and I suspect its just a case in infamiliarity(is that a word?).

Wow, this thread touched my heart. I'm 15 right now and I'm planning on getting an FD in 1.5 years. This was a really cool post and I like how it started with apnea asking about a car and then getting it in the end. I can't wait to someday get my FD. This forum is really a lot cooler than any other. You guys are great.

Disclaimer: Before anyone flames me I just want to let you know that I am working almost everyday to save money for this car and the only help I get from my parents is the left over lunch money I have :p

Infamiliarity: Well, I don't know if it's a word but I understood what you were saying so i'll go with it...So I went out for a little spin and I punched it in second and noticed that towards the end of the turbo boost I heard a noise like air escaping (probably keeping it from getting propper boost to make the secondary come online)...kinda high pitched air sounding noise...I am thinking now that the boost problem is with the hoses...so next on the list is boost guage, and hose replacements...

get a downpipe...clogging pre catalytic converter is a good cause of losing boost at high rpm. If you're boost pattern is something like 10-8-10-7 then a downpipe should take care of this

oh and you don't really need a new thermostat...stock one isn't bad...what i'd get is a downpipe and fluidyne radiator, and mod the fans to turn on with a switch or with the little ac cheat

A little late on that one dude....I ended up spending 17k on it so the dealer would get rid of a potential buyer and I tell you dis...I am not regreting one penny I spent..........................................yet

I am going to invest in a boost guage as soon as I get back on the 5th of next month...at least I will have a better idea of whats going on...then DP will come after.

After driving for 19hours I am so beat...I will post some pics tomorrow when I get the digicam from work tomorrow...

Just thought it's a little on the expensive side. But it's good as long as you think it's worth it. Good luck and have fun.
