93 RX-7 As a Daily Driver?
93 RX-7 As a Daily Driver?
Hello All,
I'm brand new to these forums and RX-7's in general, but I've been amazed by these cars ever since I saw Cameron from Petit Racing bring his TKT into our shop for dyno tuning (the former Maxspeed Motorports in Ft. Lauderdale).
In any event, I'm in the market for a new (used) car and I was considering a '93 Touring. I've gone through the pages and forums and read up on all the necessary reliability mods and recalls and I have no desire at the moment to turn the car into a 400 HP beast. My question to all of you is whether an RX-7 is usable as a daily driver. I live in Northern Indiana and have a secondary car to use for snow conditions. My commute is fairly low (35 miles per day) and most of is highway driving.
Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Andy

I daily drove my 1993 FD for 3 years.
I stopped driving it on a daily basis for the following reasons.
1. Gas $300-400/month
2. Ride (Solid diff bushings, diff brace, tranny brace, linear springs, etc etc)
3. Bought a Spec V as a daily driver.
Oh well.

I just bought my rx-7 and am currently using it as a daily driver... but I avoid driving it on errands when possible
Its not that the car can't do it - it's that I'm starting to run out of gas money. The ride is harsh and not great for daily driving and the gas consumption is rediculous but if you can put up with that then yeah its a fine daily driver. Seriously though, I had no idea it would cost this much in gas money

Yeah one of those things that if the little things breaking now and then are not enough to make things tight then the extra gas bills will. I have a s14 240sx and just drive my RX-7 in nice weather. Of course that is when it is running

I did it for 3 yrs. Don't mod the car too much (below 300 rwhp) and it will be very reliable if you keep up on the maintenance. I followed this little rule and beat on the car every chance I got, and she took it like a champ. Now, 350 rwhp was a different story though
350 is getting into the 14-15 psig range, thats where it starts to get fun, thats also where people start pushing it. Famous last words: "Just a tad leaner down low, oops." Tuning on the edge in warn weather and then boosting in the cold attributes to the majority of the cracked apex seals, IMHO.
Btw, it looks really gay having a picture of yourself as your avi.

Careful, you'll get accused of being middle-aged and balding
Hi there.
I recently bought a 92 RX-7 & am using it every day. Fuel consumption on the twin turbo 13B engine is higher than my previous Acura but you have to pay for the legend I reckon.
They make excellent daily drivers except when the 405 banks up on the way home from work & I am clutch-in-clutch-out like 500 times.
Although its cooler now, I suspect the heat may be an issue in it so I plan on getting a 99-model nose cone for added cooling. A friend did this on his 92-model & says it stays cooler in the summer heat.
Go hard or leave it at home, these things are meant to be enjoyed.
So impressed with them, so impressed

tempers are flaring lol
I think if you want to use the 7 as a daily driver it takes a lot of self-control because you cant beat on it and drive it to redline to and from work, even though you want to
I myself have trouble keeping my foot from the floor a lot of the times but I just got the car so I think ill calm down after the novelty wears off.

I'm doing it, and have for about three years. However, when the motor was rebuilt I had to borrow a car from my parents or mooch rides to work etc. The car itself can do it if properly maintained and monitored like a hawk, but it is still less reliable and much less practical then a civic or camry or corrolla or accord or what have you. It has very little storage space, so if you need to haul stuff, good luck. Since you have a beater for the snow however, I say go for it. Your commute isn't too long, although gas will be very pricey, and maintainence on the car is also rather expensive. Good luck with your decision. Josh
used mine as a d.d. and everything has been cool for 6 months (engine replacment) just keep up on maintence, and handle with care...
but im leaving for college soon and will have to sell it in june... (sigh)
