Hi Guys,

I am a new Rx7 (93) and picked up the car knowing the engine needed to be replaced. I removed the engine and disassembled the unit and now trying to decide what is the next best move. I now know the rebulders seem to want engine cores that have not been disassembled. Well this engine now is cleaned up inside and the gaskets etc are removed so it would be hard to fool anyone at this point. I don’t have a problem with spending the 25 hundred dollars on the rebuild but since I have disassembled it, the cost might be around 900 dollars more and I just cant get over that point. The engine does have some damage. The crank shaft or what ever its called needs to be resized, one rotor has the side seals or rings heated enough to freeze them in place along damage to the rotor and the side housings connected to that rotor. The rotor housing is slightly scored but I don't know if it can be saved. I need a little guidance here. I have 20 years as a General Motors drivability specialist but this engine is different and the car is so nice I want to get a good engine and a fair price. I surely need some advice, Any suggestions... John

They do require a core charge, and I'm not sure about whether or not they'll take an engine that has been disassembled, but I assume they would. Call Ray and talk to him, he's a great guy.

BTW, thats called an eccentric shaft.

What does it matter if it's dissasembled if you are not having warranty work done? ...I don't think it does. I brought my engine in three boxes to Mazdatrix. I was going to rebuild it myself but all the tools add up and I was afraid of the meticulous attention to detail needed.

I see it your way as well. There is no supprise "your" core engine is damaged, that would be the hole point in spending big bucks on a replacement. What was the cost of your engne from Mazdatrix?

John, I suggest contacting James Paventi and buying his engine. It's built by Pineapple, and I can vouch for everything. I helped him with it a lil bit, and so did GoRacer. It's rock solid, I would buy it myself... but we basically have the same engine You wont get any surprises there, good luck.

I wouldn't just slap it back together and blindly order a reman, you've already got the engine apart and have examined the damaged internals.

As an experienced mechanic, you know what you're doing well enough to pull the engine and disassemble to identify what's wrong. If you're in no rush to get it back together, start researching rotary engine design and repair now. Why not make this a learning experience? Yes, to all the naysayers I realize a first time rebuild may turn out crap - but if he has rebuilt engines before (yes, piston engine work DOES apply here), a large amount of concepts are transferable.

You're going to need at the minimum:

New or maching to the eccentric shaft (most likely new).
New side housing.
New rotor.
New side seals for both rotors.
New apex seals for both rotors.
New corner seals for both rotors.
New rotor bearings for both rotors.
New gaskets all around.

There are kits available from Mazdatrix for the standard wear/damaged items (rotors/gaskets).

While you're there you might as well examine the other rotor/side housing and all intermediate housings. It sounds like an oil starvation problem.

I take it you have all tools necessary for rebuilding an engine (dial, runout, micro, plastigauge, etc.)?

Also be aware of potential back-order issues right now.

Thank you for the information, I surely will look into all my options. As a drivability tech my first instinct is to rebuild the engine my self. I will read on about the process and not rush into anything. I also did find James P. and it’s a drag to here about his car. I have received a lot of good leads. Thanks. I will say if anyone has a General Motors, Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, etc and has a Question I will try to guide you to the answer. John
