5th gear problem, need help!

I was getting on my car 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and I had trouble getting into 3rd, slight grind. When I went to put into 5th normal driving, I wouldn't go in. I had to force in with a definite grind. I think my syncro my be broken. Anybody have any experience with this problem? How hard is it to fix? Need help soon. I'm driving to from Orlando to Miami in two weeks.

Thanks

Search. Your Synchro is done. Not TOO hard to change yourself. Search for the How-To. This is a problem in every one of our cars after while in which they corrected in later models.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that is what's wrong. Hopefully it's not expensive. Thanks for the info.

W501-17-725C is the 5th gear synchro
W503-17-550 is the shift select spindle, which apparently was upgraded and should be changed too. None of the parts are very expensive. Call Ray Crowe at Malloy, he'll fix you up with everything you'll need, including gaskets.
If your not a DIYer and your on a deadline, I'd take it to a good shop. I'm pretty sure I could do it now, but I had another forum member show me how the first (and hopefully last) time. You can save some money if you take the transmission out yourself. Good luck, I feel your pain.
