500 HP Daily Driver???

Is it possible to have a 500 HP daily driver FD in Cali? I'm in the market to purchase an FD (hopefully from this forum). It won't be a daily driver but it will be more then a weekend warrior. Is it possible to have that much horsepower and maintain reliability?

If so what do parts do you guys recommend to reach my goal? Thanks guys

Passing smog legitimately is pretty much out of the question.

YOU WILL NOT PASS SMOG LEGALLY. you will need a street ported motor, single turbo, front mount I/C, full exhaust, bigger injectors, fuel pump upgrade, pfc with tune, racing clutch , upgraded rear end, and the list goes on!. if your looking for this kind of power do the ls1 v8 swap. it will be less money and more reliable plus better gas mileage. But it will not be a true rx7 anymore.

yes it can be done... not cheap either no where near emissions legal

I'm having a T04Z going in soon with water/meth aiming for high 400's maybe if lucky 500rwhp.

From what I know and have been told, there is a difference between reliable and one that doesn't wear out. That kinda power should have some accelerated wear but if built right, it shouldn't blow up(keep in mind that once in a while something freak will happen that causes a motor built by the gods to fail, it can't be avoided)

the op needs to go read through the faq and search the forums. I don't doubt your earnestness of obtaining this level but it's not for those with a light pocketbook or for the "I need a car to get to work" crowd.

LS7 with an intake, cams and exhaust will hit 500whp n/a. And yes, an LS7 fits, it's been done before.

Damned straight. It's just the sad fact that small displacement motors can't see that kind of power while retaining all the emissions crap.

If you want smog legal AND 500 HP daily driver, v8 conversion is prolly to only way without selling your house, wife and kids, and you will no longer be driving an rx-7. Those monsters are reativly cheap fast mothers ......., but its definatly not a rex anymore. but perhaps you should re-asses your situation, why do you need a 500 HP driver anyways? rich kid with a vette beatting you to work everyday? 'cause unless its a C6 w/ an ls7 you still don't need 500 rwhp ...

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that IT CAN BE DONE...you will have to be VERY INGENIOUS AND W/DEEP POCKETS!!!!!!

Either way youre gonna have to be slick about it...you can tune the car to get close to meeting emissions and add an electric air pump(gm's corvette has been used) and a cat and be envirofriendly or you can hold onto the stock equipment and swap it when the inspection is due...UP TO YOU BUT as I said before it can be done! the 500 dd thing thats a matter of opinion but deep pockets dont hurt!

good luck

I'll go out on the other limb and say it's impossible and to keep it 100% smog legal. Got any friends in other states? :p

Is anyone forgetting that 500HP on a street FD is just tire spinning to 3rd or 4th gear depending on the tires?

most 500whp setups are big turbo applications. if your driving normal you will never even hit boost.

It sounds like I won't b able to hit 500hp? What do guys think I can get and still pass smog here in CA? I also forgot to mention that I'll be doing a few track days in this car several times a year.

I race several different types of motorcycles at Willowsprings and I wanted a similar type of "hang on to the bars" acceleration feel. This is main motivation for a high HP FD. Thanks again guys for your replies. Keep it coming

I think you need to go out and buy a Z06. You'll get the 500hp you want and a warranty

To make smog and 500whp, why not do something that's out of the ordinary: run E85. You're going to suck through fuel like no tomorrow either way, but it MAY be possible to run a big turbo, E85 and lots of extra injectors to pull 500whp with being smog legal. A couple of hi-flow cats with an electric air pump, and it may be possible. Just be prepared for fuel consumption shock.

What you want can be done with a well setup single with water injection. But as some have mentioned you will not pass smog checks through conventional ways.

Why do you need to pass emissions... Just pay someone to put another car on the machine >_>. Most rotary mechanics know people where to take your car to pass because our cars are hard to pass even when stock.
