Just came across this info on a Honda S2K forum. It is my understanding that the S2K and RX7 share the same Torsen diff. Can we really get 4.77 gears for ~$300 from KIA??

Honda sources the OEM torsen differential for their S2000 from MAZDA.

The S2000 basically is using a Mazda torsen and ring gears.

People need to REALLY start putting their foot down.

 

Let me give you an example.

What is it, like 300$+?

GM map sensor + SMC 3-way solenoid will run you about 120$ max.

 

So these will work in our FD's for sure?

 

Do the KIA units have the same strength as the OEM or aftermarket gears???

So this means if they come out with any diff or axle upgrades for the S2K then we should be able to use them also...right?

are the 4.77s streetable? Id think the 430s were the size to get if you still drive on the highway.

the timing for the price wars couldnt be better for me...im looking at gears now.

You think that's bad I had to pay about $3000 to have two sets of 477's custom made back in about 1995 and I never even got to install one in my own car : ). Machines to cut hypoid gears are super expensive plus the materials selection added a bit. Still funny though. Being made for an OEM application is the only hope for the price reaching those kind of levels. A good demonstration of the economies of scale though : ).

Probably not a streetable item in USA where the speedlimits are much higher. You guys have to remember, some of us using the 4.777 final have either

A) Drag car only
B) Live in Okinawa where top speed(legal) is 80 kph...roughly 50mph
C) Don't mind having bad gas mileage/loud cars

I think I cruise around at 80 kph(50 mph) in 5th gear at 3000+ rpms

 

Mazda OEM Gears currently available new for the later 1994+ Miata differential assembly are 3.636:1, 3.909:1, 4.10:1, 4.30:1, 4.44:1, 4.625, and 4.778. The 4.10:1 and the 4.30:1 came on the 1994-97 and '99+ Miata respectivley (4.10:1 on automatic starting in 2000). The 4.44:1 came as original equipment on 1987-88 4x4 trucks on the front axle and some commercial light duty trucks. The 3.909 came as original equipment on the 79-85 RX-7 12a as well as the 99+ 6-speed Miata. The 3.636:1 came on the 79-82 RWD 626 5-speed and is currently available new on the 2001+ Austrailan 6-speed. The 4.625 and the 4.778 come on the Kia Sportage 4x4 on the front axle. The 4.778 is US spec and the 4.625 is unique to the NZ market. Mazda has discontinued the 3.308 (optional on 82-83 B2000 diesel) gears. Steeper 4.875:1 and 5.125:1 aftermarket gears are available. All gears are interchangable as a set.

I took this from the S2000 forum to find out if what I am thinking is true. Is't the earlier 79-85 RX-7 ring gear a 7 inch verses a 8 inch on the 93 and up RX-7?

 

Okay, so we have about 5 questions but no one answered the question about it fitting the FD. Will this 4.77 fit the FD carrier. Is the Pinion the same length and thickness etc. Does anyone know?

Something I've kind of wondered about. Don't take it the wrong way but do they actually have racetracks on Okinawa? You've mentioned a lot experience with racing etc. Kinda funny they have 50mph with real race tracks hehe. Or do you have to cargo the car to race? That would suck.

Most if not all my experiece with "racing" is at the local "n00b" gathering at Misugama on sunday night. Every now and again, we'll get an HKS sponsored drag race up north in the city of Nago or a Auto Shop Turbo sponsored Dry Hopp. Those events are rather boring and I'd rather go to amateur hour to watch the Americans make a fool of themselves trying to race their stock SR20DET powered silvia Vs. me

But the FD ring IS stronger.
