stangcb is having some problems getting his car to work right, from what I can tell he inherited a bit of a mess from the previous owner.
Let's all pull together and try and help him out here. I am going to post some things he has pm'd me with in order to get this ball rolling, I hope you don't mind, Don.

He's getting error codes 06 and 56. 06 is related to the speed sensor 1. 56 is related to the ATF thermosensor. The o.p. indicated to me that he'd found some wires cut by the previous owner....I think there could be others.

to the OP.

Tell me more about your car. Is it running a PFC? Banzai Harness?

Do you know when the last fluid change occurred? Did the fluid change come with a filter change?

These "cut wires" are where on the vehicle?

I had an automatic for about 3 years....and while I was one of the few "defenders" of the auto..the "driving" experience was night and day after doing the swap because I first blew the trans (100k+ miles with stock power levels) and then the torque converter went out a year after the trans was rebuilt.

I say the "driving" experience was the main difference because from a roll the auto was just as quick....my only gripe was that in 3rd gear there's no way to "hold" the gear for a delayed shift (higher rev) like you can in 1st and 2nd with the factory hold button.

But my 2 cents are that if the auto isn't broke...don't change it

When I had my auto I remember that having the Hold button on "D" would hold the car in 3rd gear. To shift to 4th you just have to release the Hold.
